Moggallānasutta

Moggallāna With Moggallāna

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati isigilipasse kāḷasilāyaṁ mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha on the Black Rock on the Isigili Slope, together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, with five hundred bhikkhus all of whom were arahants.
At one time the Buddha was staying on the slopes of Isigili at the Black Rock, together with a large Saṅgha of five hundred mendicants, all of whom were perfected ones.

Tesaṁ sudaṁ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno cetasā cittaṁ samannesati vippamuttaṁ nirupadhiṁ.
Thereupon the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna searched their minds with his own mind [and saw that they were] released, without acquisitions.
Thereupon, with his mind, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna checked to see whose mind was liberated and free of attachments.

Atha kho āyasmato vaṅgīsassa etadahosi:
Then it occurred to the Venerable Vaṅgīsa:
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa thought,

“ayaṁ kho bhagavā rājagahe viharati isigilipasse kāḷasilāyaṁ mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi.
“The Blessed One is dwelling at Rājagaha on the Black Rock on the Isigili Slope…
“The Buddha is staying on the slopes of Isigili … with five hundred perfected ones.

Tesaṁ sudaṁ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno cetasā cittaṁ samannesati vippamuttaṁ nirupadhiṁ.
Thereupon the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna has searched their minds with his own mind [and seen that they are] released, without acquisitions.
Mahāmoggallāna is checking to see whose mind is liberated and free of attachments.

Yannūnāhaṁ āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ bhagavato sammukhā sāruppāhi gāthāhi abhitthaveyyan”ti.
Let me extol the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna in the Blessed One’s presence with suitable verses.”
Why don’t I extoll him in the Buddha’s presence with fitting verses?”

Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, raising his joined hands in reverential salutation towards the Blessed One, said to him:
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said,

“paṭibhāti maṁ, bhagavā, paṭibhāti maṁ, sugatā”ti.
“An inspiration has come to me, Blessed One! An inspiration has come to me, Fortunate One!”
“I feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!”

“Paṭibhātu taṁ, vaṅgīsā”ti bhagavā avoca.
“Then express your inspiration, Vaṅgīsa.”
“Then speak as you feel inspired,” said the Buddha.

Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ bhagavato sammukhā sāruppāhi gāthāhi abhitthavi:
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa extolled the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna in the Blessed One’s presence with suitable verses:
Then Vaṅgīsa extolled Mahāmoggallāna in his presence with fitting verses:

“Nagassa passe āsīnaṁ,
“While the sage is seated on the mountain slope,
“As the sage, who has gone beyond suffering,

muniṁ dukkhassa pāraguṁ;
Gone to the far shore of suffering,
sits upon the mountain slope,

Sāvakā payirupāsanti,
His disciples sit in attendance on him,
he is revered by disciples with the three knowledges,

tevijjā maccuhāyino.
Triple-knowledge men who have left Death behind.
conquerors of death.

Te cetasā anupariyeti,
“Moggallāna, great in spiritual power,
Moggallāna, of great psychic power,

Moggallāno mahiddhiko;
Encompassed their minds with his own,
comprehends with his mind,

Cittaṁ nesaṁ samannesaṁ,
And searching [he came to see] their minds:
scrutinizing their minds,

Vippamuttaṁ nirūpadhiṁ.
Fully released, without acquisitions!
liberated, free of attachments.

Evaṁ sabbaṅgasampannaṁ,
“Thus those perfect in many qualities
So they revere Gotama,

Muniṁ dukkhassa pāraguṁ;
Attend upon Gotama,
the sage gone beyond suffering,

Anekākārasampannaṁ,
The sage perfect in all respects,
who is endowed with all path factors,

Payirupāsanti gotaman”ti.
Gone to the far shore of suffering.
and with a multitude of attributes.”
