Gaggarāsutta

At Gaggarā Gaggarā

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā campāyaṁ viharati gaggarāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sattahi ca upāsakasatehi sattahi ca upāsikāsatehi anekehi ca devatāsahassehi.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Campā on the banks of the Gaggarā Lotus Pond, together with a large Saṅgha of five hundred mendicants, seven hundred male and seven hundred female lay followers, and many thousands of deities.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Campā on the bank of the Gaggarā Lotus Pond together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, with five hundred bhikkhus, seven hundred male lay followers, seven hundred female lay followers, and many thousands of devatās.

Tyāssudaṁ bhagavā atirocati vaṇṇena ceva yasasā ca.
But the Buddha outshone them all in beauty and glory.
The Blessed One outshone them in beauty and glory.

Atha kho āyasmato vaṅgīsassa etadahosi:
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa thought,
Then it occurred to the Venerable Vaṅgīsa:

“ayaṁ kho bhagavā campāyaṁ viharati gaggarāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sattahi ca upāsakasatehi sattahi ca upāsikāsatehi anekehi ca devatāsahassehi.
“The Buddha is staying near Campā on the banks of the Gaggarā Lotus Pond, together with a large Saṅgha of five hundred mendicants, seven hundred male and seven hundred female lay followers, and many thousands of deities.
This Blessed One is dwelling at Campā … and many thousands of devatās.

Tyāssudaṁ bhagavā atirocati vaṇṇena ceva yasasā ca.
And he outshines them all in beauty and glory.
The Blessed One outshines them in beauty and glory.

Yannūnāhaṁ bhagavantaṁ sammukhā sāruppāya gāthāya abhitthaveyyan”ti.
Why don’t I extoll him in his presence with fitting verses?”
Let me extol the Blessed One to his face with suitable verses.

Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said,
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, raising his joined hands in reverential salutation towards the Blessed One, said to him:

“paṭibhāti maṁ, bhagavā, paṭibhāti maṁ, sugatā”ti.
“I feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!”
An inspiration has come to me, Blessed One! An inspiration has come to me, Fortunate One!

“Paṭibhātu taṁ, vaṅgīsā”ti bhagavā avoca.
“Then speak as you feel inspired,” said the Buddha.
Then express your inspiration, Vaṅgīsa.

Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso bhagavantaṁ sammukhā sāruppāya gāthāya abhitthavi:
Then Vaṅgīsa extolled the Buddha in his presence with fitting verses:
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa extolled the Blessed One to his face with a suitable verse:

“Cando yathā vigatavalāhake nabhe,
“Like the moon on a cloudless night,
As the moon shines in a cloudless sky,

Virocati vigatamalova bhāṇumā;
like the shining immaculate sun,
As the sun shines devoid of stain,

Evampi aṅgīrasa tvaṁ mahāmuni,
so too Aṅgīrasa, O great sage,
So you, Aṅgīrasa, O great sage,

Atirocasi yasasā sabbalokan”ti.
your glory outshines the entire world.”
Outshine the whole world with your glory.
