Upaṭṭhānasutta

Rousing Getting Up

Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
On one occasion a certain bhikkhu was dwelling among the Kosalans in a certain woodland thicket.
At one time one of the mendicants was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

Tena kho pana samayena so bhikkhu divāvihāragato supati.
Now on that occasion when that bhikkhu had gone for his day’s abiding he fell asleep.
Now at that time that mendicant fell asleep during the day’s meditation.

Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
Then the devatā that inhabited that woodland thicket, having compassion for that bhikkhu, desiring his good, desiring to stir up a sense of urgency in him, approached him and addressed him in verses:
The deity haunting that forest had compassion for that mendicant, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that mendicant wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:

“Uṭṭhehi bhikkhu kiṁ sesi,
“Get up, bhikkhu,
“Get up, mendicant! Why lie down?

ko attho supitena te;
why lie down?
What’s the point in sleeping?

Āturassa hi kā niddā,
What need do you have for sleep?
How can the afflicted slumber

sallaviddhassa ruppato.
What slumber [can there be] for one afflicted, Stricken, pierced by the dart?
when injured by an arrow strike?

Yāya saddhāya pabbajito,
Nurture in yourself that faith
You should amplify the faith

agārasmānagāriyaṁ;
With which you left behind the home life
that led you to go forth

Tameva saddhaṁ brūhehi,
And went forth into homelessness:
from the home life to homelessness.

mā niddāya vasaṁ gamī”ti.
Don’t come under sloth’s control.”
Don’t fall under the sway of slumber.”

“Aniccā addhuvā kāmā,
[The bhikkhu:] “Sensual pleasures are impermanent, unstable,
“Sensual pleasures are impermanent and unstable,

yesu mandova mucchito;
Though the dullard is enthralled with them.
but idiots still fall for them.

Baddhesu muttaṁ asitaṁ,
When he’s free, detached among those bound,
Among those who are bound, <j>they’re free and unattached:

kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.
Why trouble one gone forth?
why bother a renunciate?

Chandarāgassa vinayā,
When, by the removal of desire and lust
By removing desire and greed,

avijjāsamatikkamā;
And the transcendence of ignorance,
by going beyond ignorance,

Taṁ ñāṇaṁ paramodānaṁ,
That knowledge has been cleansed,
that knowledge has been perfectly cleansed:

kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.
Why trouble one gone forth?
why bother a renunciate?

Chetvā avijjaṁ vijjāya,
When, by breaking ignorance with knowledge
By breaking ignorance with knowledge,

āsavānaṁ parikkhayā;
And by destruction of the taints,
by the ending of defilements,

Asokaṁ anupāyāsaṁ,
He is sorrowless, beyond despair,
they’re sorrowless, unstressed:

kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.
Why trouble one gone forth?
why bother a renunciate?

Āraddhavīriyaṁ pahitattaṁ,
When he is energetic and resolute,
Energetic, resolute,

Niccaṁ daḷhaparakkamaṁ;
Always firm in his exertion,
always staunchly vigorous,

Nibbānaṁ abhikaṅkhantaṁ,
Aspiring to attain Nibbāna,
aspiring to extinguishment:

Kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape”ti.
Why trouble one gone forth?”
why bother a renunciate?”
