Ānandasutta

Ānanda With Ānanda

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ānando kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
On one occasion the Venerable Ānanda was dwelling among the Kosalans in a certain woodland thicket.
At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ānando ativelaṁ gihisaññattibahulo viharati.
Now on that occasion the Venerable Ānanda was excessively involved instructing lay people.
Now at that time Ānanda was spending too much time informing the lay people.

Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā āyasmato ānandassa anukampikā atthakāmā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ saṁvejetukāmā yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then the devatā that inhabited that woodland thicket, having compassion for the Venerable Ānanda, desiring his good, desiring to stir up a sense of urgency in him, approached him and addressed him in verse
Then the deity haunting that forest had compassion for Ānanda, wanting what’s best for him. So they approached him wanting to stir him up, and recited these verses:

“Rukkhamūlagahanaṁ pasakkiya,
“Having entered the thicket at the foot of a tree,
“You’ve left for the jungle, the root of a tree,

Nibbānaṁ hadayasmiṁ opiya;
Having placed Nibbāna in your heart,
with quenching in your heart.

Jhāya gotama mā pamādo,
Meditate, Gotama, and don’t be negligent!
Practice absorption, Gotama, don’t be negligent!

Kiṁ te biḷibiḷikā karissatī”ti.
What will this hullabaloo do for you?”
What is this hullabaloo to you?”

Atha kho āyasmā ānando tāya devatāya saṁvejito saṁvegamāpādīti.
Then the Venerable Ānanda, stirred up by that deity, acquired a sense of urgency
Impelled by that deity, Venerable Ānanda was struck with a sense of urgency.
