Anuruddhasutta

With Anuruddha

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā anuruddho kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
On one occasion the Venerable Anuruddha was dwelling among the Kosalans in a certain woodland thicket.
At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

Atha kho aññatarā tāvatiṁsakāyikā devatā jālinī nāma āyasmato anuruddhassa purāṇadutiyikā yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then a certain devatā of the Tāvatiṃsa host named Jālinī, a former consort of the Venerable Anuruddha, approached him and addressed him in verse
Then a certain deity of the company of the Thirty-Three named Penelope had been Anuruddha’s partner in a former life. She went up to Anuruddha, and recited these verses:

“Tattha cittaṁ paṇidhehi,
Direct your mind there [to that realm]
“Set your heart there,

yattha te vusitaṁ pure;
Where you dwelt in the past
where you used to live;

Tāvatiṁsesu devesu,
Among the Tāvatiṃsa devas
among the gods of the Thirty-Three,

sabbakāmasamiddhisu;
For whom all desires are fulfilled.
whose every desire is granted!

Purakkhato parivuto,
You will shine forth highly honoured,
At the fore of a retinue

devakaññāhi sobhasī”ti.
Surrounded by celestial maidens.”
of divine maidens, you’ll shine!”

“Duggatā devakaññāyo,
“Miserable are celestial maidens,
“Divine maidens are in a sorry state,

sakkāyasmiṁ patiṭṭhitā;
Established in identity;
stuck in substantial reality.

Te cāpi duggatā sattā,
And miserable too are those beings,
And those beings too are in a sorry state,

devakaññāhi patthitā”ti.
Attached to celestial maidens.”
who are attached to divine maidens.”

“Na te sukhaṁ pajānanti,
“They do not know bliss
“They don’t know pleasure

ye na passanti nandanaṁ;
Who have not seen Nandana,
who don’t see the Garden of Delight!

Āvāsaṁ naradevānaṁ,
The abode of the glorious male devas
It’s the abode of lordly gods,

tidasānaṁ yasassinan”ti.
Belonging to the host of Thirty.”
the glorious host of Thirty!”

“Na tvaṁ bāle vijānāsi,
“Don’t you know, you fool,
“Fool, don’t you understand

yathā arahataṁ vaco;
That maxim of the arahants?
the saying of the perfected ones:

Aniccā sabbasaṅkhārā,
Impermanent are all formations;
all conditions are impermanent,

uppādavayadhammino;
Their nature is to arise and vanish.
their nature is to rise and fall;

Uppajjitvā nirujjhanti,
Having arisen, they cease:
having arisen, they cease;

tesaṁ vūpasamo sukho.
Their appeasement is blissful.
their stilling is true bliss.

Natthi dāni punāvāso,
“Now I will never again dwell
Penelope, weaver of the web,

devakāyasmi jālini;
Among the deva host, Jālinī!
there’ll be no more lives in the hosts of gods.

Vikkhīṇo jātisaṁsāro,
The wandering on in birth is ended:
Transmigration through births is finished,

natthi dāni punabbhavo”ti.
Now there is no more renewed existence.”
now there’ll be no more future lives.”
