With Sudatta Sudatta

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati sītavane.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Cool Grove.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rajagaha in the Cool Grove

Tena kho pana samayena anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati rājagahaṁ anuppatto hoti kenacideva karaṇīyena.
Now at that time the householder Anāthapiṇḍika had arrived at Rājagaha on some business.
Now on that occasion the householder Anathapindika had arrived in Rajagaha on some business

Assosi kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati:
He heard
He heard:

“buddho kira loke uppanno”ti.
a rumor that a Buddha had arisen in the world.
“A Buddha, it is said, has arisen in the world!”

Tāvadeva ca pana bhagavantaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamitukāmo hoti. Athassa anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa etadahosi:
Right away he wanted to go and see the Buddha, but he thought,
He wanted to go and see the Blessed One immediately, but it occurred to him:

“akālo kho ajja bhagavantaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṁ.
“It’s too late to go and see the Buddha today.
“It is not the right time to go and see the Blessed One today

Sve dānāhaṁ kālena bhagavantaṁ dassanāya gamissāmī”ti buddhagatāya satiyā nipajji.
I’ll go and see him tomorrow.” He went to bed thinking of the Buddha.
I will go and see the Blessed One early tomorrow morning”

Rattiyā sudaṁ tikkhattuṁ vuṭṭhāsi pabhātanti maññamāno.
During the night he got up three times thinking it was morning.
During the night he got up three times thinking it was morning.

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena sivathikadvāraṁ tenupasaṅkami.
Then he approached the Sivaka Gate,
Then the householder Anathapindika approached the gate of the charnel ground

Amanussā dvāraṁ vivariṁsu.
and non-human beings opened it for him.
Nonhuman beings opened the gate

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa nagaramhā nikkhamantassa āloko antaradhāyi, andhakāro pāturahosi, bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso udapādi, tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi.
But as he was leaving the city, light vanished and darkness appeared to him. He felt fear, terror, and goosebumps, and wanted to turn back.
Then, as the householder Anathapindika was leaving the city, the light disappeared and darkness appeared. Fear, trepidation, and terror arose in him and he wanted to turn back

Atha kho sivako yakkho antarahito saddamanussāvesi:
Then the vanished spirit Sivaka called out:
But the yakkha Sivaka, invisible, made the proclamation:

“Sataṁ hatthī sataṁ assā,
“A hundred elephants, a hundred horses,
“A hundred [thousand] elephants, A hundred [thousand] horses,

Sataṁ assatarīrathā;
a hundred mule-drawn chariots,
A hundred [thousand] mule-drawn chariots

Sataṁ kaññāsahassāni,
a hundred thousand maidens
A hundred thousand maidens

Āmukkamaṇikuṇḍalā;
bedecked with jeweled earrings:
Adorned with jewelry and earrings

Ekassa padavītihārassa,
these are not worth a sixteenth part
Are not worth a sixteenth part

Kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ.
of a single forward stride!
Of a single step forward

Abhikkama gahapati,
Forward, householder!
“Go forward householder

abhikkama gahapati;
Forward, householder!
Go forward householder

Abhikkamanaṁ te seyyo,
Going forward is better for you,
Going forward is better for you

no paṭikkamanan”ti.
not turning back!”
not turning back again.

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa andhakāro antaradhāyi, āloko pāturahosi, yaṁ ahosi bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso, so paṭippassambhi.
Then darkness vanished and light appeared to Anāthapiṇḍika. His fear, terror, and goosebumps settled down.
‘Then the darkness disappeared and light appeared to the householder Anathapindika, and the fear, trepidation, and terror that had arisen in him subsided.

Dutiyampi kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa āloko antaradhāyi, andhakāro pāturahosi, bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso udapādi, tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi.
But for a second time, light vanished and darkness appeared to him. …
A second time…

Dutiyampi kho sivako yakkho antarahito saddamanussāvesi:
For a second time the vanished spirit Sivaka called out …

“Sataṁ hatthī sataṁ assā,

…pe…

Kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ.

Abhikkama gahapati,
“Go forward, householder!

abhikkama gahapati;
“Go forward, householder!

Abhikkamanaṁ te seyyo,
“… Going forward is better for you,
“Going forward is better for you

no paṭikkamanan”ti.
not turning back!”
not turning back again.”

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa andhakāro antaradhāyi, āloko pāturahosi, yaṁ ahosi bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso, so paṭippassambhi.
Then darkness vanished and light appeared to Anāthapiṇḍika. His fear, terror, and goosebumps settled down.
‘Then the darkness disappeared and light appeared to the householder Anathapindika, and the fear, trepidation, and terror that had arisen in him subsided.

Tatiyampi kho anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa āloko antaradhāyi, andhakāro pāturahosi, bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁso udapādi, tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi.
But for a third time, light vanished and darkness appeared to him. …
A third time the light disappeared and darkness appeared before the householder Anathapindika. Fear, trepidation, and terror arose in him and he wanted to turn back.

Tatiyampi kho sivako yakkho antarahito saddamanussāvesi:
For a third time the vanished spirit Sivaka called out …
But a third time the yakkha Sivaka, invisible …

“Sataṁ hatthī sataṁ assā,

Go forward, householder!

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena sītavanaṁ yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami.
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went to the Cool Grove and approached the Buddha.
Then the householder Anathapindika approached the Blessed One in the Cool Grove.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya abbhokāse caṅkamati.
Now at that time the Buddha had risen at the crack of dawn and was walking mindfully in the open.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One, having risen at the first blush of dawn, was walking back and forth in the open.

Addasā kho bhagavā anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.
He saw Anāthapiṇḍika coming off in the distance.
The Blessed One saw the householder Anathapindika coming in the distance.

Disvāna caṅkamā orohitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
So he stepped down from the walking path, sat down on the seat spread out,
He descended from the walkway, sat down in the seat that was prepared

Nisajja kho bhagavā anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ etadavoca:
and said to Anāthapiṇḍika,
and said to the householder Anathapindika:

“ehi, sudattā”ti.
“Come, Sudatta.”
“Come, Sudatta

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati, nāmena maṁ bhagavā ālapatīti, haṭṭho udaggo tattheva bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Anāthapiṇḍika thought, “The Buddha calls me by name!” Smiling and elated, he bowed with his head at the Buddha’s feet and said to him,
Then the householder Anathapindika, thinking, “The Blessed One has addressed me by my name,” [thrilled and elated], prostrated himself right on the spot with his head at the Blessed One's feet

“kacci, bhante, bhagavā sukhamasayitthā”ti?
“Sir, I trust the Buddha slept well?”
“I hope, venerable sir, that the Blessed One slept well.”

“Sabbadā ve sukhaṁ seti,
“A brahmin who is fully quenched
“Always indeed he sleeps well,

brāhmaṇo parinibbuto;
always sleeps at ease.
The brahmin who is fully quenched

Yo na limpati kāmesu,
Sensual pleasures slip off them,
Who does not cling to sensual pleasures,

sītibhūto nirūpadhi.
they’re cooled, free of attachments.
Cool at heart, without acquisitions.

Sabbā āsattiyo chetvā,
Since they’ve cut off all clinging,
Having cut off all attachments

vineyya hadaye daraṁ;
and removed the stress from the heart,
Having removed care from the heart,

Upasanto sukhaṁ seti,
the peaceful sleep at ease,
The peaceful one sleeps well

santiṁ pappuyya cetasā”ti.
having found peace of mind.”
Having attained peace of mind”
