Punabbasusutta

With Punabbasu

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhū nibbānapaṭisaṁyuttāya dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk concerning Nibbāna.
Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment.

Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
And those bhikkhus were listening to the Dhamma with eager ears, attending to it as a matter of vital concern, applying their whole mind to it.
And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

Atha kho punabbasumātā yakkhinī puttake evaṁ tosesi:
Then the female yakkha Punabbasu’s Mother hushed her little children thus:
Then the native spirit Punabbasu’s Mother soothed her little children, saying:

“Tuṇhī uttarike hohi,
“Be quiet, Uttarikā,
“Hush, little Uttarā!

tuṇhī hohi punabbasu;
Be quiet, Punabbasu!
Hush, Punabbasu!

Yāvāhaṁ buddhaseṭṭhassa,
Of The Supreme Buddha.
For I want to listen to the teaching

dhammaṁ sossāmi satthuno.
I wish to listen to the Dhamma of the Teacher,
of the Teacher, the supreme Buddha.

Nibbānaṁ bhagavā āha,
“When the Blessed One speaks of Nibbāna,
Since the Blessed One spoke of extinguishment,

sabbaganthappamocanaṁ;
Release from all the knots,
the release from all ties,

Ativelā ca me hoti,
There has arisen within me
I have a lasting love

asmiṁ dhamme piyāyanā.
Deep affection for this Dhamma.
for this teaching.

Piyo loke sako putto,
“In the world one’s own son is dear,
In this world, your own child is dear;

piyo loke sako pati;
In the world one’s own husband is dear;
in this world, your own husband is dear;

Tato piyatarā mayhaṁ,
But even dearer than them for me
but even greater than that is my love

assa dhammassa magganā.
is the quest for this Dhamma
for this teaching’s quest.

Na hi putto pati vāpi,
“For neither one’s own son nor husband,
For neither son nor husband,

piyo dukkhā pamocaye;
Though dear, can release one from suffering
dear as they are, can free you from suffering;

Yathā saddhammassavanaṁ,
As listening to true Dhamma frees one
as listening to the true teaching

dukkhā moceti pāṇinaṁ.
From the suffering of living beings.
frees living creatures from suffering.

Loke dukkhaparetasmiṁ,
“In this world steeped in suffering,
In this world mired in suffering,

Jarāmaraṇasaṁyute;
Fettered by aging and death,
fettered by old age and death,

Jarāmaraṇamokkhāya,
For freedom from aging and death.
I want to listen to the teaching

Yaṁ dhammaṁ abhisambudhaṁ;
That he—the Buddha—fully awakened to,
that the Buddha awakened to,

Taṁ dhammaṁ sotumicchāmi,
I wish to listen to the Dhamma
which frees you from old age and death.

Tuṇhī hohi punabbasū”ti.
So be quiet, Punabbasu!”
So hush, Punabbasu!”

“Ammā na byāharissāmi,
“Mother dear, I am not talking;
“Mom, I’m not speaking,

tuṇhībhūtāyamuttarā;
This Uttarā is silent, too.
and Uttarā is silent, too.

Dhammameva nisāmehi,
Pay attention only to the Dhamma,
Focus just on the teaching,

saddhammassavanaṁ sukhaṁ;
For listening to true Dhamma is pleasant.
for it’s nice to listen to the true teaching.

Saddhammassa anaññāya,
Because we have not known true Dhamma
And it’s because we haven’t understood the teaching

ammā dukkhaṁ carāmase.
We’ve been living miserably, mother.
that we live in suffering, Mom.

Esa devamanussānaṁ,
“For devas and humans;
He is a beacon for those who are lost

sammūḷhānaṁ pabhaṅkaro;
Bewildered. He is the maker of light
among gods and humans.

Buddho antimasārīro,
Enlightened, bearing his final body,
The Buddha, bearing his final body,

dhammaṁ deseti cakkhumā”ti.
The One with Vision teaches the Dhamma.
the Clear-eyed One teaches Dhamma.”

“Sādhu kho paṇḍito nāma,
“It is good that my son has become so wise,
“It’s good that my child’s so astute,

putto jāto uresayo;
He whom I bore and nursed at my breast.
this child I bore and suckled!

Putto me buddhaseṭṭhassa,
My son, Of the Supremely Enlightened One,
My child loves the pure teaching

dhammaṁ suddhaṁ piyāyati.
loves the pure Dhamma.
of the supreme Buddha.

Punabbasu sukhī hohi,
“Punabbasu, be happy!
Punabbasu, may you be happy!

ajjāhamhi samuggatā;
Today I have emerged at last.
Today, I rise.

Diṭṭhāni ariyasaccāni,
The noble truths are seen!
Hear me too, Uttarā:

uttarāpi suṇātu me”ti.
Hear me too, O Uttarā!
I have seen the noble truths!”
