Daliddasutta

Poor Poor

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rajagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

“bhikkhavo”ti.
“Bhikkhus!”
“Mendicants!”

“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
“Venerable sir!” those bhikkhus replied.
“Venerable sir,” they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Blessed One said this:
The Buddha said this:

“Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, aññataro puriso imasmiṁyeva rājagahe manussadaliddo ahosi manussakapaṇo manussavarāko.
“Bhikkhus, once in the past in this same Rajagaha there was a poor man, a pauper, an indigent.
“Once upon a time, mendicants, there was a poor person, destitute and pitiful.

So tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye saddhaṁ samādiyi, sīlaṁ samādiyi, sutaṁ samādiyi, cāgaṁ samādiyi, paññaṁ samādiyi.
He undertook faith, virtue, learning, generosity, and wisdom in the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathagata.
They took up faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.

So tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye saddhaṁ samādiyitvā sīlaṁ samādiyitvā sutaṁ samādiyitvā cāgaṁ samādiyitvā paññaṁ samādiyitvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajji devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ sahabyataṁ.
Having done so, with the breakup of the body, after death, he was reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world, in the company of the Tavatimsa devas,
After undertaking these things, when their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm, in the company of the gods of the Thirty-Three.

So aññe deve atirocati vaṇṇena ceva yasasā ca.
where he outshone the other devas in regard to beauty and glory.
There they outshone the other gods in beauty and glory.

Tatra sudaṁ, bhikkhave, devā tāvatiṁsā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti:
Thereupon the Tavatimsa devas found fault with this, grumbled, and complained about it,
But the gods of the Thirty-Three complained, grumbled, and objected,

‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho.
‘It is wonderful indeed, sir! It is amazing indeed, sir!
‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing!

Ayañhi devaputto pubbe manussabhūto samāno manussadaliddo ahosi manussakapaṇo manussavarāko;
For formerly, when this young deva was a human being, he was a poor man, a pauper, an indigent.
For when this god was a human being in their past life they were poor, destitute, and pitiful.

so kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapanno devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ sahabyataṁ.
Yet with the breakup of the body, after death, he has been reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world, in the company of the Tavatimsa devas,
And when their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm, in the company of the gods of the Thirty-Three.

Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi:
Then, bhikkhus, Sakka, lord of the devas, addressed the Tavatimsa devas thus:
Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three,

‘mā kho tumhe, mārisā, etassa devaputtassa ujjhāyittha.
‘Dear sirs, do not find fault with this young deva.
‘Good sirs, don’t complain about this god.

Eso kho, mārisā, devaputto pubbe manussabhūto samāno tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye saddhaṁ samādiyi, sīlaṁ samādiyi, sutaṁ samādiyi, cāgaṁ samādiyi, paññaṁ samādiyi.
Formerly, when this young deva was a human being, he undertook faith, virtue, learning, generosity, and wisdom in the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathagata.

Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse anunayamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then, bhikkhus, instructing the Tavatimsa devas, Sakka, lord of the devas, on that occasion recited these verses:
Then Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse:

‘Yassa saddhā tathāgate,
‘When one has faith in the Tathagata,
‘Whoever has faith in the Realized One,

acalā suppatiṭṭhitā;
Unshakable and well established,
unwavering and well grounded;

Sīlañca yassa kalyāṇaṁ,
And good conduct built on virtue,
whose ethical conduct is good,

ariyakantaṁ pasaṁsitaṁ.
Dear to the noble ones and praised;
praised and loved by the noble ones;

Saṅghe pasādo yassatthi,
When one has confidence in the Sangha
who has confidence in the Saṅgha,

ujubhūtañca dassanaṁ;
And one's view is straightened out,
and correct view:

Adaliddoti taṁ āhu,
They say that one isn't poor;
they’re said to be prosperous,

amoghaṁ tassa jīvitaṁ.
One's life is not lived in vain.
their life is not in vain.

Tasmā saddhañca sīlañca,
Therefore to faith and virtue
So let the wise devote themselves

pasādaṁ dhammadassanaṁ;
To confidence and vision of the Dhamma
to faith, ethical behaviour,

Anuyuñjetha medhāvī,
Let the person of intelligence be devoted to,
confidence, and insight into the teaching,

saraṁ buddhāna sāsanan’”ti.
Remembering the Buddha's Teaching.’”
