Abhayātherīgāthā
Abhayā Verses of the Elder Abhaya’s Mother
“Abhaye bhiduro kāyo,
Abhayā, the body is fragile,
“Abhayā, this body is transient:
yattha satā puthujjanā;
yet ordinary people are attached to it.
this is what worldly beings should attend to.
Nikkhipissāmimaṁ dehaṁ,
I'll lay down the body,
I will cast aside this body
sampajānā satīmatī.
aware and mindful.
with mindfulness and clear comprehension.
Bahūhi dukkhadhammehi,
Though subject to so many painful things,
Amidst so much suffering,
appamādaratāya me;
I have, through my love of diligence,
I devoted myself to heedfulness.
Taṇhakkhayo anuppatto,
reached the ending of craving,
I have obtained the destruction of craving,
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
and completed the teaching of the Buddha.”
