Verses of the Elder Bhaddā Kāpilānī Bhaddā Daughter of Kapila

“Putto buddhassa dāyādo,
“Kassapa, son and heir of the Buddha,
Kassapa is the son and heir of the Buddha,

kassapo susamāhito;
has a well-collected mind.
whose mind is immersed in samādhi.

Pubbenivāsaṁ yovedi,
He knows his past lives,
He knows his past lives,

saggāpāyañca passati.
he sees heaven and hell.
he sees heaven and places of loss,

Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,
He has reached the destruction of birth;
and has attained the end of rebirth:

abhiññāvosito muni;
he is an accomplished sage with perfect insight.
that sage has perfect insight.

Etāhi tīhi vijjāhi,
He is a a brahmin
It’s because of these three knowledges

tevijjo hoti brāhmaṇo.
who possesses the three knowledges.
that the brahmin is a master of the three knowledges.

Tatheva bhaddā kāpilānī,
In the same way Bhaddā Kāpilānī
In exactly the same way, Bhaddā daughter of Kapila

tevijjā maccuhāyinī;
possesses the three knowledges, has left behind death,
is master of the three knowledges, <j>conqueror of death.

Dhāreti antimaṁ dehaṁ,
and carries her last body,
She bears her final body,

jetvā māraṁ savāhiniṁ.
having conquered Māra and his army.
having vanquished Māra and his mount.

Disvā ādīnavaṁ loke,
Having seen the danger in the world,
Seeing the danger of the world,

ubho pabbajitā mayaṁ;
we both went forth.
both of us went forth.

Tyamha khīṇāsavā dantā,
We have exhausted and tamed all the influences;
Now we are tamed, our defilements have ended;

sītibhūtamha nibbutā”ti.
we have become cool and quenched.”
we’ve become cooled and quenched.
