An Unnamed Nun (2nd) Verses of a Certain Unknown Elder

“Paṇṇavīsativassāni,
In the twenty-five years
“For twenty-five years,

yato pabbajitā ahaṁ;
since I went forth
since I had gone forth,

Nāccharāsaṅghātamattampi,
I have not found peace of mind,
I had not experienced serenity of mind,

cittassūpasamajjhagaṁ.
even for as long as a finger-snap.
not even for a split second.

Aladdhā cetaso santiṁ,
Failing to find peace of heart,
I had not attained peace of mind—

kāmarāgenavassutā;
festering with sensual desire,
I yearned for sensory gratification.

Bāhā paggayha kandantī,
I cried with flailing arms
I entered the monastery with my arms in the air,

vihāraṁ pāvisiṁ ahaṁ.
as I entered a dwelling.
crying aloud.

Sā bhikkhuniṁ upāgacchiṁ,
I approached a nun
I approached a bhikkhunī

yā me saddhāyikā ahu;
in whom I had faith.
whom I trusted.

Sā me dhammamadesesi,
She taught me the Dhamma:
She taught me the Dhamma:

khandhāyatanadhātuyo.
the aggregates, sense fields, and elements.
the khandhas, elements, and sense domains.

Tassā dhammaṁ suṇitvāna,
When I heard her teaching,
After I listened to her Dhamma,

ekamante upāvisiṁ;
I retired to a discreet place.
I sat down to one side.

Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi,
I know my past lives;
I know my past lives,

dibbacakkhu visodhitaṁ.
my clairvoyance is purified;
I have purified my divine eye.

Cetopariccañāṇañca,
I comprehend the minds of others;
I am able to read the minds of others,

sotadhātu visodhitā;
my clairaudience is purified;
and I have purified the ear element.

Iddhīpi me sacchikatā,
I've realized the psychic powers,
I have attained psychic powers,

patto me āsavakkhayo;
and attained the ending of defilements.
and reached the destruction of the influences.

Chaḷabhiññā sacchikatā,
I have realized the six kinds of direct knowledge,
I have realized the six special knowledges,

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
and completed the teaching of the Buddha.”
