Vimalātherīgāthā

Vimalā, the Former Courtesan Verses of the Elder Vimalā

“Mattā vaṇṇena rūpena,
Intoxicated by my appearance,
“Intoxicated with this beautiful body,

sobhaggena yasena ca;
my figure, my beauty, my fame,
as well as glory, success,

Yobbanena cupatthaddhā,
and owing to my youth,
and my youth,

aññāsamatimaññihaṁ.
I looked down on others.
I despised anyone who was not my equal.

Vibhūsetvā imaṁ kāyaṁ,
I adorned this body
Dressed in flashy clothes,

sucittaṁ bālalāpanaṁ;
all pretty, lamented by fools,
prattling on,

Aṭṭhāsiṁ vesidvāramhi,
and stood at the brothel door,
I stood at the entrance of the pleasure house,

luddo pāsamivoḍḍiya.
like a hunter laying a snare.
like a hunter setting traps.

Piḷandhanaṁ vidaṁsentī,
I stripped for them,
I flaunted my assets

guyhaṁ pakāsikaṁ bahuṁ;
revealing my many hidden treasures.
and often exposed my private parts;

Akāsiṁ vividhaṁ māyaṁ,
Creating an intricate illusion,
I made fun of many people,

ujjagghantī bahuṁ janaṁ.
I laughed, teasing those men.
and deceived them in many ways.

Sājja piṇḍaṁ caritvāna,
Today, having wandered for alms,
Today I walk for alms,

muṇḍā saṅghāṭipārutā;
my head shaven, wearing the outer robe,
with a shaven-head, wrapped in a robe.

Nisinnā rukkhamūlamhi,
I sat at the root of a tree to meditate;
Seated at the root of a tree,

avitakkassa lābhinī.
I've gained freedom from thought.
I attain absence of thought.

Sabbe yogā samucchinnā,
All yokes are severed,
All bonds have been cut off,

ye dibbā ye ca mānusā;
both human and heavenly.
both divine and human.

Khepetvā āsave sabbe,
Having wiped out all defilements,
Having cast away all influences,

sītibhūtāmhi nibbutā”ti.
I have become cooled and quenched.
I have become cool and quenched.”
