Bhaddā of the Curly Hair Verses of the Elder Bhaddā Kuṇḍalakesā
“Lūnakesī paṅkadharī,
My hair mown off, covered in mud,
“In the past I would wander with only one robe,
ekasāṭī pure cariṁ;
I used to wander wearing just one robe.
my head shaved and my body covered in mud.
Avajje vajjamatinī,
I saw fault where there was none,
I would see the blameworthy as blameless,
vajje cāvajjadassinī.
and was blind to the actual fault.
and the blameless as blameworthy.
Divāvihārā nikkhamma,
Leaving my day’s meditation
Having ventured out from my day’s abiding
gijjhakūṭamhi pabbate;
on Vulture’s Peak Mountain,
at Vulture’s Peak Mountain,
Addasaṁ virajaṁ buddhaṁ,
I saw the stainless Buddha
I saw the stainless Buddha,
bhikkhusaṅghapurakkhataṁ.
at the fore of the mendicant Saṅgha.
leading the monastic Saṅgha.
Nihacca jāṇuṁ vanditvā,
I bent my knee and bowed,
I knelt in respect before him,
sammukhā añjaliṁ akaṁ;
and in his presence raised my joined palms.
my hands in añjali.
‘Ehi bhadde’ti maṁ avaca,
“Come Bhaddā,” he said;
‘Come, Bhaddā!,’ he said.
sā me āsūpasampadā.
that was my ordination.
That was my higher ordination.
Ciṇṇā aṅgā ca magadhā,
“I’ve wandered among the Aṅgans and Magadhans,
I traveled to Aṅga, Magadha,
vajjī kāsī ca kosalā;
the Vajjis, Kāsis, and Kosalans.
Vajji, Kāsi, and Kosala.
Anaṇā paṇṇāsa vassāni,
I have eaten the almsfood of the nations
Free of debt, for fifty years
raṭṭhapiṇḍaṁ abhuñjahaṁ.
free of debt for fifty years.”
I ate the country’s almsfood.
Puññaṁ vata pasavi bahuṁ,
“O! He has made so much merit!
Surely he accumulated so much merit,
Sappañño vatāyaṁ upāsako;
That lay follower is so very wise.
that wise lay devotee,
Yo bhaddāya cīvaraṁ adāsi,
He gave a robe to Bhaddā,
who gave a robe to Bhaddā,
Vippamuttāya sabbaganthehī”ti.
who is released from all ties.”
released from all fetters.”
