Paṭācārā Verses of the Elder Paṭācārā

“Naṅgalehi kasaṁ khettaṁ,
Plowing the fields,
“Young men plough the field,

bījāni pavapaṁ chamā;
sowing seeds in the ground,
sowing seeds in the earth.

Puttadārāni posentā,
providing for partners and children,
As they nourish wife and children,

dhanaṁ vindanti māṇavā.
young men acquire wealth.
young men prosper.

Kimahaṁ sīlasampannā,
I am accomplished in ethics,
I have perfect morality,

satthusāsanakārikā;
and I do the Teacher’s bidding,
I follow the teaching of the Teacher,

Nibbānaṁ nādhigacchāmi,
being neither lazy nor restless—
I am not lazy nor conceited,

akusītā anuddhatā.
why then do I not achieve quenching?
so why have I not attained Nirvana?

Pāde pakkhālayitvāna,
Having washed my feet,
After washing my feet,

udakesu karomahaṁ;
I took note of the water,
I observed the water

Pādodakañca disvāna,
seeing the foot-washing water
flowing

thalato ninnamāgataṁ.
flowing from high ground to low.
downhill.

Tato cittaṁ samādhesiṁ,
My mind became serene,
From there I sought one-pointedness of mind,

assaṁ bhadraṁvajāniyaṁ;
like a fine thoroughbred steed.
like a good thoroughbred horse.

Tato dīpaṁ gahetvāna,
Then, taking a lamp,
Later, I took the lamp,

vihāraṁ pāvisiṁ ahaṁ;
I entered my dwelling,
and entered my dwelling.

Seyyaṁ olokayitvāna,
inspected the bed,
I checked the bed

mañcakamhi upāvisiṁ.
and sat on my cot.
and took a seat on a mat.

Tato sūciṁ gahetvāna,
Then, grabbing the pin,
I took the needle

vaṭṭiṁ okassayāmahaṁ;
I drew out the wick.
and pulled out the wick.

Padīpasseva nibbānaṁ,
The liberation of my heart
The emancipation of my mind

vimokkho ahu cetaso”ti.
was like the quenching of the lamp.
was like the extinguishing of a lamp.”
