Sujātā Verses of the Elder Sujātā

“Alaṅkatā suvasanā,
I was adorned with jewelry and all dressed up,
“Bejeweled and all dolled up,

mālinī candanokkhitā;
with garlands, and sandalwood makeup piled on,
wearing flower garlands, scented with sandalwood,

Sabbābharaṇasañchannā,
all covered over with decorations,
I was completely covered with adornments,

dāsīgaṇapurakkhatā.
and surrounded by my maids.
attended by a following of servants.

Annaṁ pānañca ādāya,
Taking food and drink,
After taking food and drink,

khajjaṁ bhojjaṁ anappakaṁ;
staples and dainties in no small amount,
many tasty dishes and a generous amount of grains,

Gehato nikkhamitvāna,
I left my house
I left home,

uyyānamabhihārayiṁ.
and took myself to the park.
and went to the park.

Tattha ramitvā kīḷitvā,
I enjoyed myself there and played about,
There I had a good time, played around,

āgacchantī sakaṁ gharaṁ;
and then, returning to my own house,
and then went back to my own house.

Vihāraṁ daṭṭhuṁ pāvisiṁ,
I saw a monastic dwelling,
Since I wanted to see a monastery,

sākete añjanaṁ vanaṁ.
and so I entered the Añjana grove at Sāketa.
I went into Añjana forest at Sāketa.

Disvāna lokapajjotaṁ,
Seeing the light of the world,
There I saw the Buddha, shedding light on the world.

vanditvāna upāvisiṁ;
I paid homage and sat down.
I paid respects and sat down.

So me dhammamadesesi,
Out of compassion
The Seer taught me the Dhamma

anukampāya cakkhumā.
the Clear-eyed One taught me the Dhamma.
out of compassion.

Sutvā ca kho mahesissa,
When I heard the great seer,
After hearing the Great Sage,

saccaṁ sampaṭivijjhahaṁ;
I penetrated the truth.
I penetrated the truth.

Tattheva virajaṁ dhammaṁ,
Right there I found the stainless Dhamma,
There I touched the stainless Dhamma,

phusayiṁ amataṁ padaṁ.
the state free of death.
the path to the deathless.

Tato viññātasaddhammā,
Then, having understood the true teaching,
Then, because I had become aware of the true Dhamma,

pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ;
I went forth to homelessness.
I went forth into homelessness.

Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
I’ve attained the three knowledges;
I obtained the three knowledges,

amoghaṁ buddhasāsanan”ti.
the Buddha’s bidding was not in vain.
the teaching of the Buddha was not in vain.”
