“Musalāni gahetvāna,
“Taking a pestle,
“With a pestle,

dhaññaṁ koṭṭenti māṇavā;
young men pound grain.
young men pound grain.

Puttadārāni posentā,
Providing for partners and children,
As they nourish wife and children,

dhanaṁ vindanti māṇavā.
young men acquire wealth.
young men prosper.

Ghaṭetha buddhasāsane,
Work at the Buddha’s bidding,
Work your way through the teaching of the Buddha,

yaṁ katvā nānutappati;
you won’t regret it.
and you will have no regrets.

Khippaṁ pādāni dhovitvā,
Having quickly washed your feet,
Quickly wash your feet,

ekamantaṁ nisīdatha.
sit in a discreet place to meditate.
and sit down to one side.

Cittaṁ upaṭṭhapetvāna,
Establish the mind,
Once the mind

ekaggaṁ susamāhitaṁ;
unified and serene.
is well-collected and one-pointed,

Paccavekkhatha saṅkhāre,
Examine conditions
review all formations

parato no ca attato”.
as other, not as self.”
as alien, and not as yourself.”

“Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,
“After hearing her words,
“Upon hearing these words,

paṭācārānusāsaniṁ;
the instructions of Paṭācārā,
the instructions of Paṭācārā,

Pāde pakkhālayitvāna,
I washed my feet
I washed my feet,

ekamante upāvisiṁ.
and retired to a discreet place.
and sat down to one side.

Rattiyā purime yāme,
In the first watch of the night,
In the first watch of the night,

pubbajātimanussariṁ;
I recollected my past lives.
I remembered my previous lives.

Rattiyā majjhime yāme,
In the middle watch of the night,
In the second watch of the night,

dibbacakkhuṁ visodhayiṁ.
I purified my clairvoyance.
I purified the divine eye.

Rattiyā pacchime yāme,
In the last watch of the night,
In the third watch of the night,

tamokhandhaṁ padālayiṁ;
I shattered the mass of darkness.
I destroyed this mass of darkness.

Tevijjā atha vuṭṭhāsiṁ,
I rose up master of the three knowledges:
I emerged from that possessing the three knowledges:

katā te anusāsanī.
your bidding has been done.
I did as you instructed.

Sakkaṁva devā tidasā,
I shall abide honoring you
I now possess the three knowledges and am free from influences,

saṅgāme aparājitaṁ;
as the thirty gods honor Sakka,
and will dwell revering you

Purakkhatvā vihassāmi,
undefeated in battle.
just as the thirty Devas honor Indra,

tevijjāmhi anāsavā”.
Master of the three knowledges, <j>I am free of defilements.”
unconquered in battle.”
