Cālātherīgāthā

Verses of the Elder Cālā Cālā

“Satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvāna,
“I am a bhikkhunī with well-developed spiritual powers.
“As a nun with developed faculties,

bhikkhunī bhāvitindriyā;
I established mindfulness,
having established mindfulness,

Paṭivijjhi padaṁ santaṁ,
and mastered the path of peace,
I penetrated that peaceful state,

saṅkhārūpasamaṁ sukhaṁ”.
the joyful pacification of formations.”
the blissful stilling of conditions.”

“Kaṁ nu uddissa muṇḍāsi,
“On whose account did you shave your head?
“In whose name did you shave your head?

samaṇī viya dissasi;
You seem like a contemplative,
You look like an ascetic,

Na ca rocesi pāsaṇḍe,
but you disapprove of dogmas;
but you don’t believe in any creed.

kimidaṁ carasi momuhā”.
why do you roam around confused?”
Why do you live as if lost?”

“Ito bahiddhā pāsaṇḍā,
“Those who follow dogmas
“Followers of other creeds

diṭṭhiyo upanissitā;
rely on their views.
rely on their views.

Na te dhammaṁ vijānanti,
They do not know the Dhamma;
They don’t understand the Dhamma,

na te dhammassa kovidā.
they are not masters of the Dhamma.
for they’re no experts in the Dhamma.

Atthi sakyakule jāto,
But the one who was born in the Sakyan clan,
But there is one born in the Sakyan clan,

buddho appaṭipuggalo;
the unrivaled Buddha,
the unrivaled Buddha;

So me dhammamadesesi,
taught me the Dhamma
he taught me the Dhamma

diṭṭhīnaṁ samatikkamaṁ.
that transcends views:
for going beyond views.

Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, the origin of suffering,
Suffering, suffering’s origin,

Dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
the overcoming of suffering,
suffering’s transcendence,

Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the Noble Eightfold Path
and the noble eightfold path

Dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
leading to the appeasement of suffering.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.

Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,
After I heard his words,
After hearing his words,

vihariṁ sāsane ratā;
I dwelled devoted to the teaching.
I happily did his bidding.

Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
I obtained the three knowledges,
I’ve attained the three knowledges

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
and completed the teaching of the Buddha.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.

Sabbattha vihatā nandī,
In this way all fixation is annihilated,
Relishing is destroyed in every respect,

tamokhandho padālito;
and the mass of darkness destroyed.
and the mass of darkness is shattered.

Evaṁ jānāhi pāpima,
Thus be aware, Wicked One,
So know this, Wicked One:

nihato tvamasi antaka”.
Death—you are destroyed!”
you’re beaten, terminator!”
