Upacālā Verses of the Elder Upacālā
“Satimatī cakkhumatī,
“A nun with faculties developed,
“I am mindful and of clear sight,
bhikkhunī bhāvitindriyā;
mindful, seeing clearly,
a bhikkhunī with well-developed spiritual powers.
Paṭivijjhi padaṁ santaṁ,
I penetrated that peaceful state,
I mastered the path of peace
akāpurisasevitaṁ”.
which sinners do not cultivate.”
that is not practiced by vile people.”
“Kiṁ nu jātiṁ na rocesi,
“Why don’t you approve of rebirth?
“Why don’t you appreciate being born?
jāto kāmāni bhuñjati;
When you’re born, you get to enjoy sensual pleasures.
When one is born, one enjoys sensual pleasures.
Bhuñjāhi kāmaratiyo,
Enjoy erotic delights;
Enjoy the delights of sensual pleasures,
māhu pacchānutāpinī”.
don’t regret it later.”
do not regret it later.”
“Jātassa maraṇaṁ hoti,
“Death comes to those who are born;
“From birth there is death,
hatthapādāna chedanaṁ;
and when born they fall into suffering:
the severing of hands and feet,
Vadhabandhapariklesaṁ,
the chopping off of hands and feet,
flogging, imprisonment, and hardship;
jāto dukkhaṁ nigacchati.
killing, caging, misery.
when one is born, one undergoes suffering.
Atthi sakyakule jāto,
But there is one born in the Sakyan clan,
But the one who is born in the Sakyan clan,
sambuddho aparājito;
an awakened champion.
Self-Enlightened and Unconquered,
So me dhammamadesesi,
He taught me the Dhamma
taught me the Dhamma
jātiyā samatikkamaṁ.
for passing beyond rebirth:
that transcends birth;
Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, suffering’s origin,
Suffering, the origin of suffering,
dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
suffering’s transcendence,
the overcoming of suffering,
Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the noble eightfold path
and the Noble Eightfold Path
dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.
leading to the appeasement of suffering.
Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,
After hearing his words,
After I heard his words,
vihariṁ sāsane ratā;
I happily did his bidding.
I dwelled devoted to the teaching.
Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
I’ve attained the three knowledges
I obtained the three knowledges,
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
and completed the teaching of the Buddha.
Sabbattha vihatā nandī,
Relishing is destroyed in every respect,
In this way all fixation is annihilated,
tamokhandho padālito;
and the mass of darkness is shattered.
the mass of darkness destroyed.
Evaṁ jānāhi pāpima,
So know this, Wicked One:
Thus be aware, Wicked One,
nihato tvamasi antaka”.
you’re beaten, terminator!”
Death—you are destroyed!”
