Verses of the Elder Kisāgotamī Kisāgotamī

“Kalyāṇamittatā muninā,
“The sages praise virtuous friendship,
“Pointing out how the world works,

lokaṁ ādissa vaṇṇitā;
when they speak about the world.
the sages have praised good friendship.

Kalyāṇamitte bhajamāno,
By associating with virtuous friends,
Associating with good friends,

api bālo paṇḍito assa.
even a fool may become wise.
even a fool becomes astute.

Bhajitabbā sappurisā,
One should associate with good people,
Associate with true persons,

Paññā tathā vaḍḍhati bhajantānaṁ;
as that is how wisdom grows.
for that is how wisdom grows.

Bhajamāno sappurise,
If one associates with good people,
Should you associate with true persons,

Sabbehipi dukkhehi pamucceyya.
one would be freed from all suffering.
you would be freed from all suffering.

Dukkhañca vijāneyya,
One would have knowledge of suffering,
And you would understand suffering,

Dukkhassa ca samudayaṁ nirodhaṁ;
the origin and cessation of suffering,
its origin and cessation,

Aṭṭhaṅgikañca maggaṁ,
the Eightfold Path,
the eightfold path,

Cattāripi ariyasaccāni”.
and also the Four Noble Truths.
and so the four noble truths.”

“Dukkho itthibhāvo,
‘Being a woman is difficult,’
“‘A woman’s life is painful,’

Akkhāto purisadammasārathinā;
declared the trainer of those who can be trained.
explained the Buddha, <j>guide for those who wish to train,

Sapattikampi hi dukkhaṁ,
Sharing the same husband is also suffering,
‘and for a co-wife it’s especially so.

Appekaccā sakiṁ vijātāyo.
and for some even giving birth only once.
After giving birth just once,

Galake api kantanti,
There are well-bred women who drink poisons,
some women even cut their own throat,

Sukhumāliniyo visāni khādanti;
and some who cut their husbands’ throat.
while refined ladies take poison.

Janamārakamajjhagatā,
Having become murderers,
Being guilty of killing a person,

Ubhopi byasanāni anubhonti”.
they all experience misfortune.
they both undergo ruin.’”

“Upavijaññā gacchantī,
I was on my way to give birth,
“I was on the road and about to give birth.,

addasāhaṁ patiṁ mataṁ;
when my husband died.
when I saw my husband dead.

Panthamhi vijāyitvāna,
I gave birth on the street,
I gave birth there on the road

appattāva sakaṁ gharaṁ.
far from my own house.
before I’d reached my own house.

Dve puttā kālakatā,
My two children have died,
My two children have died,

Patī ca panthe mato kapaṇikāya;
and on the roadside lies my dead husband: I am miserable!
and on the road my husband lies dead—<j>oh woe is me!

Mātā pitā ca bhātā,
Mother, father, and brother,
Mother, father, and brother

Ḍayhanti ca ekacitakāyaṁ”.
all burnt on one funeral pyre.”
all burning up on the same pyre.”

“Khīṇakulīne kapaṇe,
“Poor you, without a family,
“Oh woe is you whose family is lost,

Anubhūtaṁ te dukhaṁ aparimāṇaṁ;
you have been through a lot of suffering,
the suffering you have undergone has no measure;

Assū ca te pavattaṁ,
shedding tears
you have been shedding tears

Bahūni ca jātisahassāni.
for thousands of lives.”
for many thousands of lives.”

Vasitā susānamajjhe,
“I lived in the middle of the cemetery,
“While staying in the charnel ground,

Athopi khāditāni puttamaṁsāni;
right by my child’s half-eaten flesh.
I saw my son’s flesh being eaten.

Hatakulikā sabbagarahitā,
With family destroyed, blamed by all,
With my family destroyed, condemned by all,

Matapatikā amatamadhigacchiṁ.
a widow, I found the deathless.
and my husband dead, I realized freedom from death.

Bhāvito me maggo,
The way has been developed by me—
I’ve developed the noble eightfold path

Ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko amatagāmī;
the Noble Eightfold Path leading to the deathless.
leading to freedom from death.

Nibbānaṁ sacchikataṁ,
I realized Nirvana;
I’ve realized quenching,

Dhammādāsaṁ avekkhiṁhaṁ.
I gazed in the mirror of the Dhamma.
as seen in the mirror of the Dhamma.

Ahamamhi kantasallā,
I have removed the thorn;
I’ve plucked out the dart,

Ohitabhārā katañhi karaṇīyaṁ;
I put down the burden as ought to be done.
laid down the burden, <j>and done what needed to be done.”

Kisā gotamī therī,
The Elder Kisā Gotamī
The senior nun Kisāgotamī,

Vimuttacittā imaṁ bhaṇī”ti.
thus spoke with mind liberated.”
her mind released, said this.
