āPaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhammÄ saddhammassa sammosÄya antaradhÄnÄya saį¹vattanti. āMendicants, these five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« duggahitaį¹ suttantaį¹ pariyÄpuį¹anti dunnikkhittehi padabyaƱjanehi. Itās when the mendicants memorize discourses that they learned incorrectly, with misplaced words and phrases.
Dunnikkhittassa, bhikkhave, padabyaƱjanassa atthopi dunnayo hoti. When the words and phrases are misplaced, the meaning is misinterpreted.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo dhammo saddhammassa sammosÄya antaradhÄnÄya saį¹vattati. This is the first thing that leads to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« dubbacÄ honti, dovacassakaraį¹ehi dhammehi samannÄgatÄ, akkhamÄ appadakkhiį¹aggÄhino anusÄsaniį¹. Furthermore, the mendicants are hard to admonish, having qualities that make them hard to admonish. Theyāre impatient, and donāt take instruction respectfully.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ye te bhikkhÅ« bahussutÄ ÄgatÄgamÄ dhammadharÄ vinayadharÄ mÄtikÄdharÄ, te na sakkaccaį¹ suttantaį¹ paraį¹ vÄcenti; Furthermore, the mendicants who are very learnedāinheritors of the heritage, who have memorized the teachings, the monastic law, and the outlinesādonāt carefully make others recite the discourses.

Furthermore, the senior mendicants are indulgent and slack, leaders in backsliding, neglecting seclusion, not rousing energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

ghe kho pana, bhikkhave, bhinne aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ akkosÄ ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ paribhÄsÄ ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ parikkhepÄ ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ pariccajanÄ ca honti. When the Saį¹
gha is split, they abuse, insult, block, and forsake each other.
Tattha appasannÄ ceva nappasÄ«danti, pasannÄnaƱca ekaccÄnaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹ hoti. This doesnāt inspire confidence in those without it, and it causes some with confidence to change their minds.

PaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhammÄ saddhammassa į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya anantaradhÄnÄya saį¹vattanti. These five things lead to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« suggahitaį¹ suttantaį¹ pariyÄpuį¹anti sunikkhittehi padabyaƱjanehi. Itās when the mendicants memorize discourses that have been learned correctly, with well placed words and phrases.
Sunikkhittassa, bhikkhave, padabyaƱjanassa atthopi sunayo hoti. When the words and phrases are well organized, the meaning is correctly interpreted.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo dhammo saddhammassa į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya anantaradhÄnÄya saį¹vattati. This is the first thing that leads to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« suvacÄ honti sovacassakaraį¹ehi dhammehi samannÄgatÄ, khamÄ padakkhiį¹aggÄhino anusÄsaniį¹. Furthermore, the mendicants are easy to admonish, having qualities that make them easy to admonish. Theyāre patient, and take instruction respectfully.
