Tatiyasaddhammasammosasutta The Decline of the True Teaching (3rd)

ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattanti. ā€œMendicants, these five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« duggahitaį¹ suttantaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡anti dunnikkhittehi padabyaƱjanehi. Itā€™s when the mendicants memorize discourses that they learned incorrectly, with misplaced words and phrases.

Dunnikkhittassa, bhikkhave, padabyaƱjanassa atthopi dunnayo hoti. When the words and phrases are misplaced, the meaning is misinterpreted.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the first thing that leads to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« dubbacā honti, dovacassakaraį¹‡ehi dhammehi samannāgatā, akkhamā appadakkhiį¹‡aggāhino anusāsaniį¹. Furthermore, the mendicants are hard to admonish, having qualities that make them hard to admonish. Theyā€™re impatient, and donā€™t take instruction respectfully.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the second thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ye te bhikkhÅ« bahussutā āgatāgamā dhammadharā vinayadharā mātikādharā, te na sakkaccaį¹ suttantaį¹ paraį¹ vācenti; Furthermore, the mendicants who are very learnedā€”inheritors of the heritage, who have memorized the teachings, the monastic law, and the outlinesā€”donā€™t carefully make others recite the discourses.

tesaį¹ accayena chinnamÅ«lako suttanto hoti appaį¹­isaraį¹‡o. When they pass away, the discourses are cut off at the root, with no-one to preserve them.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the third thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, therā bhikkhÅ« bāhulikā honti sāthalikā okkamane pubbaį¹…gamā paviveke nikkhittadhurā, na vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhanti appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya. Furthermore, the senior mendicants are indulgent and slack, leaders in backsliding, neglecting seclusion, not rousing energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

Tesaį¹ pacchimā janatā diį¹­į¹­hānugatiį¹ āpajjati. Those who come after them follow their example.

Sāpi hoti bāhulikā sāthalikā okkamane pubbaį¹…gamā paviveke nikkhittadhurā, na vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya. They too are indulgent and slack ā€¦

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, catuttho dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fourth thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹…gho bhinno hoti. Furthermore, thereā€™s a schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Saį¹…ghe kho pana, bhikkhave, bhinne aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ akkosā ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ paribhāsā ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ parikkhepā ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ pariccajanā ca honti. When the Saį¹…gha is split, they abuse, insult, block, and forsake each other.

Tattha appasannā ceva nappasÄ«danti, pasannānaƱca ekaccānaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹ hoti. This doesnā€™t inspire confidence in those without it, and it causes some with confidence to change their minds.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paƱcamo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fifth thing that leads to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca dhammā saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattanti. These five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

PaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattanti. These five things lead to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« suggahitaį¹ suttantaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡anti sunikkhittehi padabyaƱjanehi. Itā€™s when the mendicants memorize discourses that have been learned correctly, with well placed words and phrases.

Sunikkhittassa, bhikkhave, padabyaƱjanassa atthopi sunayo hoti. When the words and phrases are well organized, the meaning is correctly interpreted.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the first thing that leads to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« suvacā honti sovacassakaraį¹‡ehi dhammehi samannāgatā, khamā padakkhiį¹‡aggāhino anusāsaniį¹. Furthermore, the mendicants are easy to admonish, having qualities that make them easy to admonish. Theyā€™re patient, and take instruction respectfully.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the second thing ā€¦

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the third thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, therā bhikkhÅ« na bāhulikā honti na sāthalikā, okkamane nikkhittadhurā paviveke pubbaį¹…gamā; vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhanti appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya. Furthermore, the senior mendicants are not indulgent and slack, leaders in backsliding, neglecting seclusion. They rouse energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

Tesaį¹ pacchimā janatā diį¹­į¹­hānugatiį¹ āpajjati. Those who come after them follow their example.

Sāpi hoti na bāhulikā na sāthalikā, okkamane nikkhittadhurā paviveke pubbaį¹…gamā, vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya. They too are not indulgent or slack ā€¦

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, catuttho dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fourth thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹…gho samaggo sammodamāno avivadamāno ekuddeso phāsuį¹ viharati. Furthermore, the Saį¹…gha lives comfortably, in harmony, appreciating each other, without quarreling, with one recitation.

Saį¹…ghe kho pana, bhikkhave, samagge na ceva aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ akkosā honti, na ca aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ paribhāsā honti, na ca aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ parikkhepā honti, na ca aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ pariccajanā honti. When the Saį¹…gha is in harmony, they donā€™t abuse, insult, block, or forsake each other.

Tattha appasannā ceva pasīdanti, pasannānaƱca bhiyyobhāvo hoti. This inspires confidence in those without it, and increases confidence in those who have it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paƱcamo dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fifth thing that leads to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca dhammā saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattantÄ«ā€ti. These five things lead to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.ā€
