Anussatiį¹­į¹­hānasutta Topics for Recollection

ā€œChayimāni, bhikkhave, anussatiį¹­į¹­hānāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these six topics for recollection.

Katamāni cha? What six?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ anussarati: Firstly, a noble disciple recollects the Realized One:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti, nikkhantaį¹ muttaį¹ vuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ gedhamhā. At that time their mind is unswerving. Theyā€™ve left behind greed; theyā€™re free of it and have risen above it.

ā€˜Gedhoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannetaį¹ kāmaguį¹‡Änaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Greedā€™ is a term for the five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Idampi kho, bhikkhave, ārammaį¹‡aį¹ karitvā evamā€™idhekacce sattā visujjhanti. Relying on this, some sentient beings are purified in this way.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako dhammaį¹ anussarati: Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo ā€¦peā€¦ paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddhaā€”apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako dhammaį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the teaching their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saį¹…ghaį¹ anussarati: Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the Saį¹…gha:

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho ā€¦peā€¦ anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€™ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples is practicing the way thatā€™s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€™

ā€˜Gedhoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannetaį¹ kāmaguį¹‡Änaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.

Idampi kho, bhikkhave, ārammaį¹‡aį¹ karitvā evamā€™idhekacce sattā visujjhanti.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako attano sÄ«lāni anussarati akhaį¹‡įøÄni ā€¦peā€¦ samādhisaį¹vattanikāni. Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects their own ethical precepts, which are intact, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion.

Yasmiį¹, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako sÄ«laį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects their ethical precepts their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

ā€˜lābhā vata me. Suladdhaį¹ vata me ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜Iā€™m so fortunate, so very fortunate!

yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgaratoā€™ti. Among people full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.ā€™

ā€¦peā€¦ When a noble disciple recollects their generosity their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

Evamā€™idhekacce sattā visujjhanti.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako devatā anussarati: Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the deities:

ā€˜santi devā cātumahārājikā, santi devā tāvatiį¹sā, santi devā yāmā, santi devā tusitā, santi devā nimmānaratino, santi devā paranimmitavasavattino, santi devā brahmakāyikā, santi devā tatuttari. ā€˜There are the gods of the four great kings, the gods of the thirty-three, the gods of Yama, the joyful gods, the gods who love to imagine, the gods who control what is imagined by others, the gods of the Divinityā€™s host, and gods even higher than these.

YathārÅ«pāya saddhāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā; mayhampi tathārÅ«pā saddhā saį¹vijjati. When those deities passed away from here, they were reborn there because of their faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. I, too, have the same kind of faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.ā€™

paƱƱāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā; mayhampi tathārÅ«pā paƱƱā saį¹vijjatÄ«ā€™ti.

Yasmiį¹, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako attano ca tāsaƱca devatānaį¹ saddhaƱca sÄ«laƱca sutaƱca cāgaƱca paƱƱaƱca anussarati nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom of both themselves and the deities their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti, nikkhantaį¹ muttaį¹ vuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ gedhamhā. At that time their mind is unswerving. Theyā€™ve left behind greed; theyā€™re free of it and have risen above it.
