āImaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ aƱƱatarÄ devatÄ abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä ā¦peā¦ āMendicants, tonight a deity ā¦ said to me:
āsattime, bhante, dhammÄ bhikkhuno aparihÄnÄya saį¹vattanti. āSir, these seven things donāt lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee.
Katame satta? What seven?
SatthugÄravatÄ, dhammagÄravatÄ, saį¹
ghagÄravatÄ, sikkhÄgÄravatÄ, samÄdhigÄravatÄ, sovacassatÄ, kalyÄį¹amittatÄ. Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saį¹
gha, for the training, for immersion; being easy to admonish, and good friendship.
Ime kho, bhante, satta dhammÄ bhikkhuno aparihÄnÄya saį¹vattantÄ«āti. These seven things donāt lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee.ā
Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sÄ devatÄ. That is what that deity said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«āti. Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable SÄriputta said to the Buddha:
āimassa kho ahaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ saį¹
khittena bhÄsitassa evaį¹ vitthÄrena atthaį¹ ÄjÄnÄmi. āSir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddhaās brief statement.
Idha, bhante, bhikkhu attanÄ ca satthugÄravo hoti, satthugÄravatÄya ca vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Itās when a mendicant personally respects the Teacher and praises such respect.
Ye caƱƱe bhikkhÅ« na satthugÄravÄ te ca satthugÄravatÄya samÄdapeti. And they encourage other mendicants who lack such respect to respect the Teacher.
Ye caƱƱe bhikkhÅ« satthugÄravÄ tesaƱca vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhaį¹ati bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ kÄlena. And they praise other mendicants who respect the Teacher at the right time, truthfully and correctly.
AttanÄ ca dhammagÄravo hoti ā¦peā¦ They personally respect the teaching ā¦
