Dutiyasovacassatāsutta Easy to Admonish (2nd)

ā€œImaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ aƱƱatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œMendicants, tonight a deity ā€¦ said to me:

ā€˜sattime, bhante, dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saį¹vattanti. ā€˜Sir, these seven things donā€™t lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee.

Katame satta? What seven?

Satthugāravatā, dhammagāravatā, saį¹…ghagāravatā, sikkhāgāravatā, samādhigāravatā, sovacassatā, kalyāį¹‡amittatā. Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saį¹…gha, for the training, for immersion; being easy to admonish, and good friendship.

Ime kho, bhante, satta dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saį¹vattantÄ«ā€™ti. These seven things donā€™t lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee.ā€™

Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sā devatā. That is what that deity said.

Idaį¹ vatvā maį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ā€ti. Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Buddha:

ā€œimassa kho ahaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa evaį¹ vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāmi. ā€œSir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddhaā€™s brief statement.

Idha, bhante, bhikkhu attanā ca satthugāravo hoti, satthugāravatāya ca vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Itā€™s when a mendicant personally respects the Teacher and praises such respect.

Ye caƱƱe bhikkhÅ« na satthugāravā te ca satthugāravatāya samādapeti. And they encourage other mendicants who lack such respect to respect the Teacher.

Ye caƱƱe bhikkhÅ« satthugāravā tesaƱca vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhaį¹‡ati bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ kālena. And they praise other mendicants who respect the Teacher at the right time, truthfully and correctly.

Attanā ca dhammagāravo hoti ā€¦peā€¦ They personally respect the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghagāravo hoti ā€¦ They personally respect the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

sikkhāgāravo hoti ā€¦ They personally respect the training ā€¦

samādhigāravo hoti ā€¦ They personally respect immersion ā€¦

suvaco hoti ā€¦ They are personally easy to admonish ā€¦

kalyāį¹‡amitto hoti, kalyāį¹‡amittatāya ca vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. They personally have good friends, and praise such friendship.

Ye caƱƱe bhikkhÅ« na kalyāį¹‡amittā te ca kalyāį¹‡amittatāya samādapeti. And they encourage other mendicants who lack good friends to develop good friendship.

Ye caƱƱe bhikkhÅ« kalyāį¹‡amittā tesaƱca vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhaį¹‡ati bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ kālenāti. And they praise other mendicants who have good friends at the right time, truthfully and correctly.

Imassa kho ahaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa evaį¹ vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāmÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddhaā€™s brief statement.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Sādhu kho tvaį¹, sāriputta, imassa mayā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa evaį¹ vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāsi. Itā€™s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what Iā€™ve said in brief like this.
