Ubbāhikāsutta A Judge

ā€œKatihi nu kho, bhante, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ubbāhikāya sammannitabboā€ti? ā€œSir, how many qualities should a mendicant have to be deemed a judge?ā€

ā€œDasahi kho, upāli, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ubbāhikāya sammannitabbo. ā€œUpāli, a mendicant should have ten qualities to be deemed a judge.

Katamehi dasahi? What ten?

Idhupāli, bhikkhu sÄ«lavā hoti; pātimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aį¹‡umattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvÄ«, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu; Itā€™s when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyā€™ve undertaken.

bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāį¹‡Ä majjhekalyāį¹‡Ä pariyosānakalyāį¹‡Ä sātthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathārÅ«pāssa dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā; Theyā€™re very learned, remembering and keeping what theyā€™ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatā€™s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

ubhayāni kho panassa pātimokkhāni vitthārena svāgatāni honti suvibhattāni suppavattīni suvinicchitāni suttaso anubyaƱjanaso; Both monastic codes have been passed down to them in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, well evaluated in both the rules and accompanying material.

vinaye kho pana į¹­hito hoti asaį¹hÄ«ro; Theyā€™re firm and unfaltering in the training.

paį¹­ibalo hoti ubho atthapaccatthike saƱƱāpetuį¹ paƱƱāpetuį¹ nijjhāpetuį¹ pekkhetuį¹ pasādetuį¹; When there are opposing parties, theyā€™re able to persuade, advocate, and convince them, make them see the other side and trust each other.

adhikaraį¹‡asamuppādavÅ«pasamakusalo hotiā€”Theyā€™re skilled in raising and settling disciplinary issues.

adhikaraį¹‡aį¹ jānāti; They know what a disciplinary issue is.

adhikaraį¹‡asamudayaį¹ jānāti; They know how a disciplinary issue originates.

adhikaraį¹‡anirodhaį¹ jānāti; They know how a disciplinary issue ceases.

adhikaraį¹‡anirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ jānāti. They know the practical way leading to the cessation of a disciplinary issue.

Imehi kho, upāli, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ubbāhikāya sammannitabboā€ti. A mendicant should have these ten qualities to be deemed a judge.ā€
