VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, taį¹huppÄdÄ, yattha bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjati. āMendicants, there are four things that give rise to craving in a mendicant.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
CÄ«varahetu vÄ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjati; For the sake of robes,
piį¹įøapÄtahetu vÄ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjati; almsfood,
senÄsanahetu vÄ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjati; lodgings,
itibhavÄbhavahetu vÄ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjati. or rebirth in this or that state.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro taį¹huppÄdÄ yattha bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjatÄ«āti. These are the four things that give rise to craving in a mendicant.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āTaį¹hÄdutiyo puriso, āCraving is a personās partner
dÄ«ghamaddhÄna saį¹saraį¹; as they transmigrate on this long journey.
ItthabhÄvaƱƱathÄbhÄvaį¹, They go from this state to another,
saį¹saraį¹ nÄtivattati. but donāt escape transmigration.
EtamÄdÄ«navaṠñatvÄ, Knowing this danger,
taį¹haį¹ dukkhassa sambhavaį¹; that craving is the cause of sufferingā
VÄ«tataį¹ho anÄdÄno, rid of craving, free of grasping,
sato bhikkhu paribbajeāti. a mendicant would wander mindful.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
