Vijjāsutta Knowledge

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜vijjā, vijjāā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜knowledgeā€™.

Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; What is knowledge?

kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, sutavā ariyasāvako rÅ«paį¹ pajānāti, rÅ«pasamudayaį¹ ā€¦ rÅ«panirodhaį¹ ā€¦ rÅ«panirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ pajānāti. ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when a learned noble disciple understands form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

Vedanaį¹ ā€¦ They understand feeling ā€¦

saƱƱaį¹ ā€¦ perception ā€¦

saį¹…khāre pajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ choices ā€¦

viƱƱāį¹‡anirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ pajānāti. consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjā; This is called knowledge.

ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.ā€
