Catutthasāriputtakoį¹­į¹­hikasutta With Sāriputta and Koį¹­į¹­hita (4th)

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ca sāriputto, āyasmā ca mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko bārāį¹‡asiyaį¹ viharanti isipatane migadāye. At one time Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hito yenāyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahākoį¹­į¹­hikena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Sāriputta came out of retreat, went to Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita, and they greeted each other.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaį¹ mahākoį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita:

ā€œā€˜kiį¹ nu kho, āvuso koį¹­į¹­hika, hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œReverend Koį¹­į¹­hita, does a realized one still exist after death?ā€ ā€¦

ā€˜kiį¹ panāvuso, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ti iti puį¹­į¹­ho samāno: ā€œReverend, when asked these questions, you say that this has not been declared by the Buddha.

ā€˜etampi kho, āvuso, abyākataį¹ bhagavatāā€”

neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ti vadesi.

Ko nu kho, āvuso, hetu, ko paccayo, yenetaį¹ abyākataį¹ bhagavatāā€ti? Whatā€™s the cause, whatā€™s the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œRÅ«pārāmassa kho, āvuso, rÅ«paratassa rÅ«pasammuditassa rÅ«panirodhaį¹ ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taį¹, ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™tipissa hoti; ā€œReverend, if you like, love, and enjoy form, and donā€™t truly see the cessation of form, you think ā€˜a realized one still exists after deathā€™ or

ā€˜na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™tipissa hoti; ā€˜A realized one no longer exists after deathā€™ or

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo, yenetaį¹ abyākataį¹ bhagavatāā€ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€œSiyā panāvuso, aƱƱopi pariyāyo, yenetaį¹ abyākataį¹ bhagavatāā€ti? ā€œBut reverend, could there be another way of explaining why this was not declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œSiyā, āvuso. ā€œThere could, reverend.

Bhavārāmassa kho, āvuso, bhavaratassa bhavasammuditassa, bhavanirodhaį¹ ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taį¹, ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™tipissa hoti ā€¦peā€¦ If you like, love, and enjoy existence, and donā€™t truly see the cessation of continued existence, you think ā€˜a realized one still exists after deathā€™ ā€¦

Upādānārāmassa kho, āvuso, upādānaratassa upādānasammuditassa, upādānanirodhaį¹ ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taį¹, ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™tipissa hoti ā€¦peā€¦ If you like, love, and enjoy grasping, and donā€™t truly see the cessation of grasping, you think ā€˜a realized one still exists after deathā€™ ā€¦

Na upādānārāmassa kho, āvuso, na upādānaratassa na upādānasammuditassa, upādānanirodhaį¹ jānato passato yathābhÅ«taį¹, ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™tipissa na hoti ā€¦peā€¦ If you donā€™t like, love, and enjoy grasping, and you truly see the cessation of grasping, you donā€™t think ā€˜a realized one still exists after deathā€™ ā€¦

ā€œEttha dāni, āvuso sāriputta, ito uttari kiį¹ icchasi? ā€œSeriously, reverend, what more could you want?

Taį¹‡hāsaį¹…khayavimuttassa, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhuno vaį¹­į¹­aį¹ natthi paƱƱāpanāyāā€ti. For one who is freed due to the ending of craving, there is no cycle of rebirths to be found.ā€
