Khadirapattasutta Acacia Leaves

ā€œYo, bhikkhave, evaį¹ vadeyya: ā€œMendicants, suppose someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaį¹ dukkhaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ anabhisamecca, dukkhasamudayaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ anabhisamecca, dukkhanirodhaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ anabhisamecca, dukkhanirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaį¹ karissāmÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.ā€™

netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. That is not possible.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yo evaį¹ vadeyya: Itā€™s as if someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaį¹ khadirapattānaį¹ vā saralapattānaį¹ vā āmalakapattānaį¹ vā puį¹­aį¹ karitvā udakaį¹ vā tālapattaį¹ vā āharissāmÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Iā€™ll make a basket out of acacia leaves or pine needles or myrobalan leaves, and use it to carry water or a palm frond.ā€™

netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati; That is not possible.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaį¹ vadeyya: In the same way, suppose someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaį¹ dukkhaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ anabhisamecca ā€¦peā€¦ dukkhanirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaį¹ karissāmÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.ā€™

ā€˜ahaį¹ padumapattānaį¹ vā palāsapattānaį¹ vā māluvapattānaį¹ vā puį¹­aį¹ karitvā udakaį¹ vā tālapattaį¹ vā āharissāmÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Iā€™ll make a basket out of lotus leaves or flame-of-the-forest leaves or camelā€™s foot creeper leaves, and use it to carry water or a palm frond.ā€™

į¹­hānametaį¹ vijjati; That is possible.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaį¹ vadeyya: In the same way, suppose someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaį¹ dukkhaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ abhisamecca ā€¦peā€¦ dukkhanirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ abhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaį¹ karissāmÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜After truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.ā€™

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
