NakhasikhÄsutta A Fingernail
Atha kho bhagavÄ parittaį¹ nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹suį¹ ÄropetvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt under his fingernail, addressed the mendicants:
āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, āWhat do you think, mendicants?
katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹āyo vÄyaį¹ mayÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito, ayaį¹ vÄ mahÄpathavÄ«āti? Which is more: the little bit of dirt under my fingernail, or this great earth?ā
āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹ yadidaį¹āmahÄpathavÄ«; appamattakÄyaį¹ bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito. āSir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt under your fingernail is tiny.

āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvakassa diį¹į¹hisampannassa puggalassa abhisametÄvino etadeva bahutaraį¹ dukkhaį¹ yadidaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹aį¹ pariyÄdinnaį¹; appamattakaį¹ avasiį¹į¹haį¹. āIn the same way, for a person with comprehension, a noble disciple accomplished in view, the suffering thatās over and done with is more, whatās left is tiny.

yo āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti ā¦peā¦ āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti. Such a person truly understands about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
