Nakhasikhāsutta A Fingernail

Atha kho bhagavā parittaį¹ nakhasikhāyaį¹ paį¹suį¹ āropetvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt under his fingernail, addressed the mendicants:

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, ā€œWhat do you think, mendicants?

katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹ā€”yo vāyaį¹ mayā paritto nakhasikhāyaį¹ paį¹su āropito, ayaį¹ vā mahāpathavÄ«ā€ti? Which is more: the little bit of dirt under my fingernail, or this great earth?ā€

ā€œEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹ yadidaį¹ā€”mahāpathavÄ«; appamattakāyaį¹ bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaį¹ paį¹su āropito. ā€œSir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt under your fingernail is tiny.

Saį¹…khampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti mahāpathaviį¹ upanidhāya bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaį¹ paį¹su āropitoā€ti. Compared to the great earth, it doesnā€™t count, thereā€™s no comparison, itā€™s not worth a fraction.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa diį¹į¹hisampannassa puggalassa abhisametāvino etadeva bahutaraį¹ dukkhaį¹ yadidaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādinnaį¹; appamattakaį¹ avasiį¹į¹haį¹. ā€œIn the same way, for a person with comprehension, a noble disciple accomplished in view, the suffering thatā€™s over and done with is more, whatā€™s left is tiny.

Saį¹…khampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti purimaį¹ dukkhakkhandhaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādinnaį¹ upanidhāya yadidaį¹ sattakkhattuparamatā; Compared to the mass of suffering in the past thatā€™s over and done with, it doesnā€™t count, thereā€™s no comparison, itā€™s not worth a fraction, since there are at most seven more lives.
