atthesu jātesusukhā sakhāyā puį¹Ć±aį¹ sukhaį¹jÄ«vitasaį¹khayamhi ą„¤ Friends are good whenever need arises, at the break-up of life merit is good,

toį¹£į¹­Ä« sukhā yā itarÄ«tarena sabbassa pāpassa sukhaį¹ prahāį¹‡aį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ being content with everything is good, the abandoning of all wickedness is good.

sukhā mātreatā loke tato petteatā sukhā ą„¤ Respecting oneā€™s mother is good in the world, also respecting oneā€™s father is good,

śāmannatā sukhā loke tato brāhmannatā sukhā ą„¤ą„¤ respecting ascetics is good in the world, also respecting true brahmins is good.

sukhaį¹ yāvaj jarā śīlaį¹ sukhā śraddhā pratiį¹£į¹­hitā ą„¤ Virtuous conduct till old age is good, the establishing of faith is good,

sukhā attharasā vācā assiį¹ mānakkhayo sukho ą„¤ą„¤ speech that is beneficial is good, the destruction of conceit is good.

sukho buddhāna uppādo sukhā dhammassa deśanā ą„¤ The arising of the Buddhas is good, the teaching of the Dhamma is good,

sukhā saį¹ghassa sāmaggrÄ« samaggrāį¹‡Äį¹ tapo sukho ą„¤ą„¤ the harmony of the Saį¹…gha is good, devotion to harmony is good.

sukhaį¹ daį¹Å›anam ayirāį¹‡Äį¹ saį¹vāso pi satāį¹ sukho ą„¤ Meeting with the noble is pleasant, living with good people is pleasant,

addaį¹Å›anena bālānāį¹ niccam eva sukhÄ« siyā ą„¤ą„¤ through not meeting foolish people one will constantly be happy.

bālāsaį¹…gatacārÄ« hi drÄ«gham addhāna śocati ą„¤ For he who consorts with fools grieves for a long time,

dukkho bālehi saį¹vāso amittehi-r-iva sabbadā ą„¤ dwelling with fools is always suffering as it is with enemies,

dhÄ«rā tu sukhasaį¹vāsā ƱātÄ«naį¹ vā samāgamo ą„¤ą„¤ the wise ones dwell happily as with an assembly of kin.

tassā hi dhÄ«raį¹ ca bahuśśutaƱ ca dhoreyaśīlavratamantam ayiraį¹ ą„¤ Therefore the firm and the learned, the virtuous, dutiful and nobleā€”

taį¹ tārisaį¹ sappuruį¹£aį¹ sumedhaį¹ sevetha nakkhattapathe va candramā ą„¤ą„¤ follow such a true and intelligent person as the moon follows the course of the stars.

priyāto jāyate dukkhaį¹ priyā śokā priyā bhayaį¹ ą„¤ From love there arises grief, with love grief, with love fear,

priyāto vipramuttassa nāsti śokā kato bhayaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ for one who is free from love there is no grief, how is there fear?

mā priyehi samāgaį¹ma apriyehi kadācanaį¹ ą„¤ Do not associate at any time with those who are loved or with those unloved,

priyassa addaį¹Å›anaį¹ dukkhaį¹ apriyassa ca daį¹Å›anaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ there is suffering not meeting the loved one, and suffering from meeting the unloved one.

tassā priyaį¹ na kayirātha priyāvādo hi pāpako ą„¤ Therefore do not hold anything as loved, for speaking of the loved is loathsome.

ggraį¹thā tesaį¹ na vijjanti yesaį¹ nāsti priyāpriyaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ There are no knots for those who hold nothing as loved or as unloved.

chudhā parama rogāį¹‡Äį¹ saį¹khāraparamaį¹ dukhaį¹ ą„¤ Hunger is the supreme sickness, conditions are the supreme suffering,

etaį¹ Ʊāttā yathābhÅ«taį¹ nibbāį¹‡aparamaį¹ sukhaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ knowing this as it really is, know Nibbāna is the supreme good.

āroggaparamā lābhā sāį¹toį¹£į¹­Ä«paramaį¹ dhanaį¹ ą„¤ Health is the supreme gain, content the supreme wealth,

viśśāsaparamā ƱātÄ« nibbāį¹‡aparamaį¹ sukhaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ confidence the supreme kin, Nibbāna the supreme good.

māttāsukhapariccāgā paśśe ce vipulāį¹ sukhaį¹ ą„¤ If, by renouncing a small good, he might see a good that is large,

caje māttāsukhaį¹ dhÄ«ro saį¹paśśaį¹ vipulāį¹ sukham ą„¤ą„¤ the wise one should renounce that small good, seeing the good that is extensive.

manujassa sadā satÄ«mato māttaį¹ jāniya laddhibhojane ą„¤ For a human who is always mindful, knowing the measure in food received,

tanukā ā€™ssa bhavanti vedanā śanikaį¹ jÄ«rati āyu pālayaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ his painful feelings become slight, he ages slowly, guarding his lifespan.

dullabho puruį¹£Äjaį¹Ć±o na so sabbattha jāyati ą„¤ A person of good breed is rare, that one is not born everywhere,

yattha so jāyate vÄ«ro taį¹ kulaį¹ sukham edhati ą„¤ą„¤ wherever that hero is born, that family gains happiness.

sabbattha ve sappuruį¹£Ä bhavanti na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo ą„¤ There are surely true people everywhere, the good do not talk of desiring sense-pleasures;

sukhena phuį¹­į¹­hā uttavā dukhena noccāvacaį¹ sappuruį¹£Ä karonti ą„¤ą„¤ when touched by pleasure or by suffering, true people are not elated or depressed.

jayaį¹ veraį¹ prasavati dukkhaį¹ śeti parājito ą„¤ The victor generates hatred, the defeated one finds suffering,

upaśānto sukhaį¹ śeti hettā jayaparājayaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ the one at peace lives happily, having abandoned victory and defeat.

sukhā najjo sÅ«patitthā sukho dhammajito jano ą„¤ Pleasant are rivers with good fords, pleasant is the person conquered by Dhamma,

sukho śraddhapaį¹­Ä«lābho pāpassa akaraį¹‡aį¹ sukhaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ the acquisition of faith is good, doing nothing wicked is good.

sukhaį¹ draį¹£į¹­uį¹ śīlavanto sukhaį¹ draį¹£į¹­uį¹ bahuśśutā ą„¤ It is pleasant to meet the virtuous, it is pleasant to meet the learned,

arahanto pi sukhaį¹ draį¹£į¹­uį¹ vipramuttā niropadhÄ« ą„¤ą„¤ it is pleasant to meet the Worthy Ones, who are free from attachments.
