Bhītāsutta

Afraid Afraid

“Kiṁsūdha bhītā janatā anekā,
“Why are so many people here afraid
“Why are so many people here afraid,

Maggo canekāyatanappavutto;
When the path has been taught with many bases?
when the path has been taught <j>with so many dimensions?

Pucchāmi taṁ gotama bhūripañña,
I ask you, O Gotama, broad of wisdom:
I ask you, Gotama, whose wisdom is vast:

Kismiṁ ṭhito paralokaṁ na bhāye”ti.
On what should one take a stand To have no fear of the other world?”
Standing on what need one not fear the next world?”

“Vācaṁ manañca paṇidhāya sammā,
“Having directed speech and mind rightly,
“When speech and mind are directed right,

Kāyena pāpāni akubbamāno;
Doing no evil deeds with the body,
and you don’t do anything bad with the body

Bahvannapānaṁ gharamāvasanto,
Dwelling at home with ample food and drink,
while dwelling at home with plenty of food and drink.

Saddho mudū saṁvibhāgī vadaññū;
Faithful, gentle, generous, amiable:
Faithful, gentle, charitable, and bountiful:

Etesu dhammesu ṭhito catūsu,
When one stands on these four things,
standing on these four principles,

Dhamme ṭhito paralokaṁ na bhāye”ti.
Standing firmly on the Dhamma, One need not fear the other world. ”
standing on the teaching <j>one need not fear the next world.”
