Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho suddhikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the brahmin Suddhika Bhāradvāja approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him.
Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Pure went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk,
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side,

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho suddhikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ ajjhabhāsi:
he sat down to one side and recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
and recited this verse in his presence:

“Na brāhmaṇo sujjhati koci,
“In the world no brahmin is ever purified
“No brahmin in the world is ever purified

Loke sīlavāpi tapokaraṁ;
Though he be virtuous and austere in practice;
even though he’s ethical and mortifies himself.

Vijjācaraṇasampanno,
One accomplished in knowledge and conduct is purified,
But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct

So sujjhati na aññā itarā pajā”ti.
Not the others, the common folk. ”
is purified, not these commoners.”

“Bahumpi palapaṁ jappaṁ,
[The Blessed One: ] “Even though one mutters many chants,
“Even one who mutters many prayers

na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;
One does not become a brahmin by birth
is no brahmin by birth

Antokasambu saṅkiliṭṭho,
If one is rotten within and defiled,
if they’re filthy and corrupt within,

kuhanaṁ upanissito.
Supporting oneself by fraudulent means.
supporting themselves by fraud.

Khattiyo brāhmaṇo vesso,
“Whether khattiya, brahmin, vessa,
Regardless of whether you’re an aristocrat,

Suddo caṇḍālapukkuso;
sudda, Caṇḍāla or scavenger,
a brahmin, peasant, menial, or a corpse-worker or scavenger—

Āraddhavīriyo pahitatto,
If one is energetic and resolute,
if you’re energetic and resolute,

Niccaṁ daḷhaparakkamo;
Always firm in exertion,
always staunchly vigorous,

Pappoti paramaṁ suddhiṁ,
One attains the supreme purity:
you’ll attain ultimate purity.

Evaṁ jānāhi brāhmaṇā”ti.
Know, O brahmin, that this is so. ”
Know that for a fact, brahmin.”

Evaṁ vutte, suddhikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the brahmin Suddhika Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:
When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Pure said to the Buddha,

“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Magnificent, Master Gotama!”…
“Excellent, Mister Gotama …” …

aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
