Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā anuruddho sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time Venerable Sāriputta was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
On one occasion the Venerable Anuruddha was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park.
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā anuruddho rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya dhammapadāni bhāsati.
Now at that time Venerable Anuruddha rose at the crack of dawn and recited passages of the teaching.
Now on that occasion the Venerable Anuruddha, having risen at the first flush of dawn, was reciting stanzas of Dhamma.
Atha kho piyaṅkaramātā yakkhinī puttakaṁ evaṁ tosesi:
Then the native spirit Piyaṅkara’s Mother soothed her little child, saying:
Then the female yakkha Piyaṅkara’s Mother hushed her little child thus:
“Mā saddaṁ kari piyaṅkara,
“Don’t make a sound, Piyaṅkara!
“Do not make a sound, Piyaṅkara,
Bhikkhu dhammapadāni bhāsati;
A mendicant recites passages of the teaching.
A bhikkhu recites Dhamma-stanzas.
Api ca dhammapadaṁ vijāniya,
When we understand a passage,
Having understood a Dhamma-stanza,
Paṭipajjema hitāya no siyā.
we can practice for our welfare.
We might practise for our welfare.
Pāṇesu ca saṁyamāmase,
Let us restrain ourselves from harming living creatures,
“Let us refrain from harming living beings,
Sampajānamusā na bhaṇāmase;
and speak no lying words.
Let us not speak a deliberate lie,
Sikkhema susīlyamattano,
We should train ourselves well in ethics,
We should train ourselves in virtue:
Api muccema pisācayoniyā”ti.
and hopefully we’ll be freed from the goblin realm.”
Perhaps we’ll be freed from the goblin realm.”
