Aññatarātherīgāthā

Verses of a Certain Unknown Elder An Unnamed Nun (1st)

Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa.
Homage to the Bhagavant, the Arahant, the Sammāsambuddha.
Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!

“Sukhaṁ supāhi therike,
“Sleep with ease, Elder,
Sleep softly, little nun,

Katvā coḷena pārutā;
wrapped in a rag.
wrapped in the cloth you sewed yourself;

Upasanto hi te rāgo,
Your passion has been appeased
for your desire has been quelled,

Sukkhaḍākaṁ va kumbhiyan”ti.
like a dry vegetable in a pot.”
like vegetables boiled dry in a pot.

Itthaṁ sudaṁ aññatarā therī apaññātā bhikkhunī gāthaṁ abhāsitthāti.
Thus a certain unknown Elder Bhikkhunī spoke this verse.
That is how this verse was recited by a certain unnamed nun.
