Verses of the Thirty Elders Thirty Nuns

“Musalāni gahetvāna,
“With a pestle,
“Taking a pestle,

dhaññaṁ koṭṭenti māṇavā;
young men pound grain.
young men pound grain.

Puttadārāni posentā,
As they nourish wife and children,
Supporting partners and children,

dhanaṁ vindanti māṇavā.
young men prosper.
young men acquire wealth.

Karotha buddhasāsanaṁ,
Do what the Buddha taught,
Do the Buddha’s bidding,

yaṁ katvā nānutappati;
and you will have no regrets.
you won’t regret it.

Khippaṁ pādāni dhovitvā,
Quickly wash your feet,
Having quickly washed your feet,

ekamante nisīdatha;
and sit down on one side.
sit in a discreet place to meditate.

Cetosamathamanuyuttā,
Commit to tranquility of mind—
Devoted to serenity of heart,

karotha buddhasāsanaṁ”.
do what the Buddha taught.”
do the Buddha’s bidding.”

Tassā tā vacanaṁ sutvā,
Upon hearing these words,
After hearing her words,

paṭācārāya sāsanaṁ;
the teaching of Paṭācārā,
the instructions of Paṭācārā,

Pāde pakkhālayitvāna,
they washed their feet
they washed their feet

ekamantaṁ upāvisuṁ;
and sat down to one side.
and retired to a discreet place.

Cetosamathamanuyuttā,
Committing to tranquility of mind,
Devoted to serenity of heart,

akaṁsu buddhasāsanaṁ.
they followed the teachings of the Buddha.
they did the Buddha’s bidding.

Rattiyā purime yāme,
In the first watch of the night,
In the first watch of the night,

pubbajātimanussaruṁ;
they remembered their previous lives.
they recollected their past lives.

Rattiyā majjhime yāme,
In the second watch of the night,
In the middle watch of the night,

dibbacakkhuṁ visodhayuṁ;
they purified the divine eye.
they purified their clairvoyance.

Rattiyā pacchime yāme,
In the third watch of the night,
In the last watch of the night,

tamokhandhaṁ padālayuṁ.
they destroyed this mass of darkness.
they shattered the mass of darkness.

Uṭṭhāya pāde vandiṁsu,
They stood up and paid homage at her feet:
They rose and paid homage at her feet:

“katā te anusāsanī;
“We did as you instructed.
“We have done your bidding;

Indaṁva devā tidasā,
We now possess the three knowledges and are free from influences,
we shall abide honoring you,

saṅgāme aparājitaṁ;
and will dwell revering you
as the thirty gods honor Indra,

Purakkhatvā vihassāma,
just as the thirty Devas honor Indra,
undefeated in battle.

tevijjāmha anāsavā”ti.
unconquered in battle.”
Masters of the three knowledges, <j>we are free of defilements.”

Itthaṁ sudaṁ tiṁsamattā therī bhikkhuniyo paṭācārāya santike aññaṁ byākariṁsūti.
In this way Thirty Elder Bhikkhunīs attained perfect knowledge in the presence of Paṭācārā.
That is how thirty senior nuns declared their enlightenment in the presence of Paṭācārā.
