Mahāpajāpati Gotamī Verses of the Elder Mahāpajāpati Gotamī

“Buddha vīra namo tyatthu,
Oh Buddha, my hero: homage to you!
“Homage to you, Buddha, Hero!

sabbasattānamuttama;
Supreme among all beings,
Best of all beings,

Yo maṁ dukkhā pamocesi,
who released me from suffering,
who released me and many others

aññañca bahukaṁ janaṁ.
and many other beings as well.
from suffering.

Sabbadukkhaṁ pariññātaṁ,
All suffering is fully understood;
All suffering is fully understood,

Hetutaṇhā visositā;
craving—its cause—is dried up;
craving, its cause, has been made to wither,

Bhāvito aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo,
the eightfold path has been developed;
the Eightfold Path has been developed,

Nirodho phusito mayā.
and cessation has been realized by me.
and I have attained cessation.

Mātā putto pitā bhātā,
Previously I was a mother, a son,
In the past I was a mother, a child, a father, a brother,

ayyakā ca pure ahuṁ;
a father, a brother, and a grandmother.
and a grandmother.

Yathābhuccamajānantī,
Failing to grasp the true nature of things,
Blind to the truth,

saṁsariṁhaṁ anibbisaṁ.
I transmigrated without reward.
I returned again and again, never finding in the darkness what I sought.

Diṭṭho hi me so bhagavā,
Since I have seen the Blessed One,
I have seen the Bhagavant—

antimoyaṁ samussayo;
this bag of bones is my last.
indeed, this is my last body.

Vikkhīṇo jātisaṁsāro,
Transmigration through births is finished,
Destroyed is rebirth in saṁsāra,

natthi dāni punabbhavo.
now there’ll be no more future lives.
now there is no coming back to any state of being.

Āraddhavīriye pahitatte,
I see the disciples in harmony,
See the disciples on the path—

Niccaṁ daḷhaparakkame;
energetic and resolute,
established in energy, self-directed,

Samagge sāvake passe,
always staunchly vigorous—
always making a sincere effort:

Esā buddhāna vandanā.
this is homage to the Buddhas!
this is paying homage to the Buddhas!

Bahūnaṁ vata atthāya,
It was truly for the benefit of many
Indeed, for the benefit of many beings,

Māyā janayi gotamaṁ;
that Māyā gave birth to Gotama.
Māyā gave birth to Gotama.

Byādhimaraṇatunnānaṁ,
He swept away the mass of suffering
Sickness, death,

Dukkhakkhandhaṁ byapānudī”ti.
for those stricken by sickness and death.
and the mass of suffering are vanquished.”
