Paį¹­hamapāpadhammasutta Bad Character (1st)

ā€œPāpaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, pāpena pāpataraƱca; ā€œMendicants, I will teach you whoā€™s bad and whoā€™s worse,

kalyāį¹‡aƱca, kalyāį¹‡ena kalyāį¹‡ataraƱca. Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha ā€¦peā€¦. whoā€™s good and whoā€™s better.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpo? And whoā€™s bad?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti. Itā€™s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyā€™re covetous, malicious, with wrong view.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpo. This is called bad.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpena pāpataro? And whoā€™s worse?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti, paraƱca pāį¹‡Ätipāte samādapeti ā€¦peā€¦ attanā ca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, paraƱca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiyā samādapeti. Itā€™s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. Theyā€™re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. And they encourage others to do these things.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpena pāpataro. This is called worse.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti ā€¦peā€¦ sammādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti. Itā€™s someone who doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They donā€™t use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyā€™re contented, kind-hearted, with right view.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, kalyāį¹‡o. This is called good.
