Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sÄkete viharati aƱjanavane migadÄye. At one time the Buddha was staying near SÄketa in the deer park at the AƱjana Wood.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
āatthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma yÄni paƱcindriyÄni tÄni paƱca balÄni honti, yÄni paƱca balÄni tÄni paƱcindriyÄni hontÄ«āti? āMendicants, is there a method in which the five faculties become the five powers, and the five powers become the five faculties?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ bhagavaį¹nettikÄ bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹Ä. SÄdhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti ā¦peā¦ āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma yÄni paƱcindriyÄni tÄni paƱca balÄni honti, yÄni paƱca balÄni tÄni paƱcindriyÄni honti? And what is that method?
Yaį¹, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹ taį¹ saddhÄbalaį¹, yaį¹ saddhÄbalaį¹ taį¹ saddhindriyaį¹; The faculty of faith is the power of faith, and the power of faith is the faculty of faith.
yaį¹ vÄ«riyindriyaį¹ taį¹ vÄ«riyabalaį¹, yaį¹ vÄ«riyabalaį¹ taį¹ vÄ«riyindriyaį¹; The faculty of energy is the power of energy, and the power of energy is the faculty of energy.
yaį¹ satindriyaį¹ taį¹ satibalaį¹, yaį¹ satibalaį¹ taį¹ satindriyaį¹; The faculty of mindfulness is the power of mindfulness, and the power of mindfulness is the faculty of mindfulness.
yaį¹ samÄdhindriyaį¹ taį¹ samÄdhibalaį¹, yaį¹ samÄdhibalaį¹ taį¹ samÄdhindriyaį¹; The faculty of immersion is the power of immersion, and the power of immersion is the faculty of immersion.

SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, nadÄ« pÄcÄ«naninnÄ pÄcÄ«napoį¹Ä pÄcÄ«napabbhÄrÄ, tassa majjhe dÄ«po. Suppose that there was a river slanting, sloping, and inclining to the east, and in the middle was an island.
Atthi, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma tassÄ nadiyÄ eko sototveva saį¹
khyaį¹ gacchati. Thereās a method in which that river can be reckoned to have just one stream.
Atthi pana, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma tassÄ nadiyÄ dve sotÄnitveva saį¹
khyaį¹ gacchanti. But thereās also a method in which that river can be reckoned to have two streams.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma tassÄ nadiyÄ eko sototveva saį¹
khyaį¹ gacchati? And whatās the method in which that river can be reckoned to have just one stream?
YaƱca, bhikkhave, tassa dÄ«passa purimante udakaį¹, yaƱca pacchimante udakaį¹āBy taking into account the water to the east and the west of the island,
ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma tassÄ nadiyÄ eko sototveva saį¹
khyaį¹ gacchati. that river can be reckoned to have just one stream.

ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma tassÄ nadiyÄ dve sotÄnitveva saį¹
khyaį¹ gacchanti. that river can be reckoned to have two streams.
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yaį¹ saddhindriyaį¹ taį¹ saddhÄbalaį¹, yaį¹ saddhÄbalaį¹ taį¹ saddhindriyaį¹; By the same method, the faculty of faith is the power of faith, and the power of faith is the faculty of faith.

PaƱcannaį¹, bhikkhave, indriyÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ bhikkhu ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharatÄ«āti. Itās because of developing and cultivating the five faculties that a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā
