Sāketasutta At Sāketa

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sākete viharati aƱjanavane migadāye. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāketa in the deer park at the AƱjana Wood.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

ā€œatthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma yāni paƱcindriyāni tāni paƱca balāni honti, yāni paƱca balāni tāni paƱcindriyāni hontÄ«ā€ti? ā€œMendicants, is there a method in which the five faculties become the five powers, and the five powers become the five faculties?ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaį¹nettikā bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹‡Ä. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹ibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œAtthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma yāni paƱcindriyāni tāni paƱca balāni honti, yāni paƱca balāni tāni paƱcindriyāni honti. ā€œMendicants, there is a method in which the five faculties become the five powers, and the five powers become the five faculties.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma yāni paƱcindriyāni tāni paƱca balāni honti, yāni paƱca balāni tāni paƱcindriyāni honti? And what is that method?

Yaį¹, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹ taį¹ saddhābalaį¹, yaį¹ saddhābalaį¹ taį¹ saddhindriyaį¹; The faculty of faith is the power of faith, and the power of faith is the faculty of faith.

yaį¹ vÄ«riyindriyaį¹ taį¹ vÄ«riyabalaį¹, yaį¹ vÄ«riyabalaį¹ taį¹ vÄ«riyindriyaį¹; The faculty of energy is the power of energy, and the power of energy is the faculty of energy.

yaį¹ satindriyaį¹ taį¹ satibalaį¹, yaį¹ satibalaį¹ taį¹ satindriyaį¹; The faculty of mindfulness is the power of mindfulness, and the power of mindfulness is the faculty of mindfulness.

yaį¹ samādhindriyaį¹ taį¹ samādhibalaį¹, yaį¹ samādhibalaį¹ taį¹ samādhindriyaį¹; The faculty of immersion is the power of immersion, and the power of immersion is the faculty of immersion.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, nadÄ« pācÄ«naninnā pācÄ«napoį¹‡Ä pācÄ«napabbhārā, tassa majjhe dÄ«po. Suppose that there was a river slanting, sloping, and inclining to the east, and in the middle was an island.

Atthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma tassā nadiyā eko sototveva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchati. Thereā€™s a method in which that river can be reckoned to have just one stream.

Atthi pana, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma tassā nadiyā dve sotānitveva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchanti. But thereā€™s also a method in which that river can be reckoned to have two streams.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma tassā nadiyā eko sototveva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchati? And whatā€™s the method in which that river can be reckoned to have just one stream?

YaƱca, bhikkhave, tassa dÄ«passa purimante udakaį¹, yaƱca pacchimante udakaį¹ā€”By taking into account the water to the east and the west of the island,

ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma tassā nadiyā eko sototveva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchati. that river can be reckoned to have just one stream.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma tassā nadiyā dve sotānitveva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchanti? And whatā€™s the method in which that river can be reckoned to have two streams?

YaƱca, bhikkhave, tassa dÄ«passa uttarante udakaį¹, yaƱca dakkhiį¹‡ante udakaį¹ā€”By taking into account the water to the north and the south of the island,

ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma tassā nadiyā dve sotānitveva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchanti. that river can be reckoned to have two streams.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yaį¹ saddhindriyaį¹ taį¹ saddhābalaį¹, yaį¹ saddhābalaį¹ taį¹ saddhindriyaį¹; By the same method, the faculty of faith is the power of faith, and the power of faith is the faculty of faith.

yaį¹ vÄ«riyindriyaį¹ taį¹ vÄ«riyabalaį¹, yaį¹ vÄ«riyabalaį¹ taį¹ vÄ«riyindriyaį¹; The faculty of energy is the power of energy, and the power of energy is the faculty of energy.

yaį¹ samādhindriyaį¹ taį¹ samādhibalaį¹, yaį¹ samādhibalaį¹ taį¹ samādhindriyaį¹; The faculty of immersion is the power of immersion, and the power of immersion is the faculty of immersion.

yaį¹ paƱƱindriyaį¹ taį¹ paƱƱābalaį¹, yaį¹ paƱƱābalaį¹ taį¹ paƱƱindriyaį¹. The faculty of wisdom is the power of wisdom, and the power of wisdom is the faculty of wisdom.

PaƱcannaį¹, bhikkhave, indriyānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€ti. Itā€™s because of developing and cultivating the five faculties that a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€
