Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho sÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Standing to one side, that devatÄ recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
āNa mÄnakÄmassa damo idhatthi, āOne fond of conceit canāt be tamed, āThere is no taming here for one fond of conceit,
Na monamatthi asamÄhitassa; no sage is lacking immersion. Nor is there sagehood for the unconcentrated:
Eko araƱƱe viharaį¹ pamatto, Living negligent alone in the wilderness, Though dwelling alone in the forest, heedless,
Na maccudheyyassa tareyya pÄranāti. they canāt pass beyond Deathās dominion.ā One cannot cross beyond the realm of Death. ā
āMÄnaį¹ pahÄya susamÄhitatto, āHaving given up conceit, serene within oneself, āHaving abandoned conceit, well concentrated,
Sucetaso sabbadhi vippamutto; with a good heart, everywhere free; With lofty mind, everywhere released:
Eko araƱƱe viharaį¹ appamatto, living diligent alone in the wilderness, While dwelling alone in the forest, diligent,
