Mānakāmasutta Fond of Conceit Fond of Conceit One Prone to Conceit

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Standing to one side, a devatā addressed the Blessed One with a verse: Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

“Na mānakāmassa damo idhatthi, “Here there’s no taming for one fond of conceit, “One fond of conceit can’t be tamed, “There is no taming here for one fond of conceit,

Na monamatthi asamāhitassa; no sagacity for one unconcentrated. no sage is lacking immersion. Nor is there sagehood for the unconcentrated:

Eko araññe viharaṁ pamatto, One dwelling alone in the wilderness heedlessly Living negligent alone in the wilderness, Though dwelling alone in the forest, heedless,

Na maccudheyyassa tareyya pāran”ti. won’t cross over beyond Deaths’ realm.” they can’t cross beyond Death’s dominion.” One cannot cross beyond the realm of Death. ”
