DutiyaavijjÄpahÄnasutta Giving Up Ignorance (2nd)
Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu ā¦peā¦ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā¦ and asked him,
āatthi nu kho, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahÄnÄ bhikkhuno avijjÄ pahÄ«yati, vijjÄ uppajjatÄ«āti? āSir, is there one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge?ā
āAtthi kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahÄnÄ bhikkhuno avijjÄ pahÄ«yati, vijjÄ uppajjatÄ«āti. āThere is, mendicant.ā
āKatamo pana, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahÄnÄ bhikkhuno avijjÄ pahÄ«yati, vijjÄ uppajjatÄ«āti? āBut what is that one thing?ā
āAvijjÄ kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahÄnÄ bhikkhuno avijjÄ pahÄ«yati, vijjÄ uppajjatÄ«āti. āIgnorance is one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge.ā
āKathaį¹ pana, bhante, jÄnato, kathaį¹ passato avijjÄ pahÄ«yati, vijjÄ uppajjatÄ«āti? āBut how does a mendicant know and see so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge?ā
āIdha, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaį¹ hoti: āTake a mendicant who has heard:
āsabbe dhammÄ nÄlaį¹ abhinivesÄyÄāti. āNothing is worth insisting on.ā
EvaƱcetaį¹, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaį¹ hoti: When a mendicant has heard that
āsabbe dhammÄ nÄlaį¹ abhinivesÄyÄāti. nothing is worth insisting on,
So sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ abhijÄnÄti, sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ abhiƱƱÄya sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ parijÄnÄti, sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ pariƱƱÄya sabbanimittÄni aƱƱato passati, cakkhuį¹ aƱƱato passati, rÅ«pe ā¦ they directly know all things. Directly knowing all things, they completely understand all things. Completely understanding all things, they see all signs as other. They see the eye, sights,
cakkhuviƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦ eye consciousness,
cakkhusamphassaį¹ ā¦ and eye contact as other.
yampidaį¹ cakkhusamphassapaccayÄ uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vÄ dukkhaį¹ vÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ vÄ tampi aƱƱato passati ā¦peā¦ And they also see the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact as other. ā¦
manaį¹ aƱƱato passati, dhamme ā¦ They see the mind, ideas,
manoviƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦ mind consciousness,
manosamphassaį¹ ā¦ and mind contact as other.
yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayÄ uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vÄ dukkhaį¹ vÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ vÄ tampi aƱƱato passati. And they also see the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact as other.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, jÄnato evaį¹ passato bhikkhuno avijjÄ pahÄ«yati, vijjÄ uppajjatÄ«āti. Thatās how a mendicant knows and sees so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge.ā
