Dutiyaavijjāpahānasutta Giving Up Ignorance (2nd)

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu ā€¦peā€¦ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œatthi nu kho, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, is there one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere is, mendicant.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut what is that one thing?ā€

ā€œAvijjā kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIgnorance is one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge.ā€

ā€œKathaį¹ pana, bhante, jānato, kathaį¹ passato avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how does a mendicant know and see so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaį¹ hoti: ā€œTake a mendicant who has heard:

ā€˜sabbe dhammā nālaį¹ abhinivesāyāā€™ti. ā€˜Nothing is worth insisting on.ā€™

EvaƱcetaį¹, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaį¹ hoti: When a mendicant has heard that

ā€˜sabbe dhammā nālaį¹ abhinivesāyāā€™ti. nothing is worth insisting on,

So sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ abhijānāti, sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ abhiƱƱāya sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ parijānāti, sabbaį¹ dhammaį¹ pariƱƱāya sabbanimittāni aƱƱato passati, cakkhuį¹ aƱƱato passati, rÅ«pe ā€¦ they directly know all things. Directly knowing all things, they completely understand all things. Completely understanding all things, they see all signs as other. They see the eye, sights,

cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦ eye consciousness,

cakkhusamphassaį¹ ā€¦ and eye contact as other.

yampidaį¹ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi aƱƱato passati ā€¦peā€¦ And they also see the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact as other. ā€¦

manaį¹ aƱƱato passati, dhamme ā€¦ They see the mind, ideas,

manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦ mind consciousness,

manosamphassaį¹ ā€¦ and mind contact as other.

yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi aƱƱato passati. And they also see the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact as other.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, jānato evaį¹ passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant knows and sees so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge.ā€
